Billy Hope (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) is the undisputed light-heavyweight boxing champion of the world. He is unbeaten over a career of 43 fights. He is happily married to beautiful Maureen (Rachel McAdams) and has a young daughter, Leila (Oona Laurence). His life seems perfect, but then, during a fracas with a rival boxer, his wife is shot and killed. They had known each other since they were 12 years old, and now the bottom has fallen out of his world. The death of his wife sends Billy into a downward spiral, resulting in him being barred from professional boxing for a year, the loss of his house and almost all his possessions and, most painfully, the loss of his daughter to the custody of Social Services. In order to gain back his daughter and restart his life, he seeks out a particular trainer, Tick Wills (Forest Whitaker). Now he is starting his life again, at the bottom.

A drama unfolds in the life of a boxer, but he gets a chance to fix everything in one fight, where no one expects anything from him. How many times have we seen a similar plot? Just remember Rocky, the best film in the boxing genre. It's practically the same plot. And how many sequels does Rocky have? And every film is about the same thing: nothing is impossible for a person who is motivated to fix their life. To be honest, these are not the kind of films that are downright boring. First, they motivate, and second, they show that even if everything in your life is bad, someone else's life could be even worse.

Despite the fact that these films are not boring, they no longer seem interesting. Yes, if this is your first film about a boxer, then you will most likely experience a storm of emotions while watching it, but Rocky is more understandable to the average viewer. He had problems that everyone could relate to. As for the main character in Southpaw, you have to try hard to get into his shoes. More than two-thirds of the film is devoted to his fall down the social ladder.
Despite all of the above, I liked the film. First of all, I liked the metamorphosis that the main character goes through, which is undoubtedly thanks to Jake Gyllenhaal. Personally, I don't really relate to the character's personality, but I understand him well. His anger, which destroyed his whole life, and his efforts to control it are conveyed in a very accessible way. That's why I personally empathized with the main character.

I'm not really interested in the atmosphere of sports competitions, arenas, and half-naked girls with signs, but when the character hit rock bottom, the atmosphere of poor American neighborhoods had a positive effect on my perception of the film.

Unremarkable, not the first (Rocky) or the last (Creed) film in its genre, it became another good drama with an excellent actor in the lead role.
