Bullet in the Head is a film from John Woo's pre-American period, filled with his characteristic theatrical melodrama and poetically filmed bloody violence. The story of three childhood friends whose friendship did not withstand the test of war and bloodshed and ended tragically involves so many victims that the old films of Schwarzenegger or Stallone do not even come close.
The main characters are bulletproof, and the ammunition in their machine guns and pistols never runs out. Instead, hundreds of enemies are defeated. The lead role is played by the wonderful actor Tony Leung, who later starred in Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love and 2046, and given his intelligent, “gentlemanly” appearance, it was interesting to see him in combat scenes. I must say, he did well. The role suited him. The film itself is very easy to watch, although it is sad. You watch it and think: how well it all started for them and how badly it all ended. The endless troubles that the three friends get into, smuggling, war, tests of endurance, betrayal, and hatred for each other—the film is shot with an almost epic scope. The scale of the fight scenes was also surprising.
To shoot such a grandiose action film for so little money—that takes skill. In general, the film has all the typical ingredients of John Woo: an abundance of fights, a lot of casualties, heroes who are practically invulnerable to enemies, the theme of betrayal and broken friendship, and all this is imbued with a kind of universal melancholy. The film is far from perfect, but it makes a strong impression.
