User Review

An erotic thriller with simultaneous feelings of something gloomy and twilight, growing into a pathological psycho-emotional state of tragic experiences, and languid, alluring sexuality with the slowness of an observer and contemplator. All this is aggravated by some idiotic cheerful music at certain moments, which would be more suitable for comedies of the same production years, but at times, in some moments, it adds a peculiar charm to what is happening. Franco shot this film, which, according to some sources, is a remake of his own The Devil's Doctor Z, under the pseudonym Frank Hallmann.

The beautiful, slender girl with dark straight hair, Soledad Miranda, loved (and continues to love) Dr. Jones (Fred Williams) - a man whose research is relentlessly moving forward, preparing new ways and medicines for humanity to fight serious diseases. However, the doctor's research is immoral and anti-humanistic because he uses human embryos. This is extremely unsatisfactory to his colleagues, who boycott his activities, calling him a “criminal,” “madman,” and “animal.” All of Jones's endeavors and further medical activities are forcibly stopped by the scientific council. Unable to endure such treatment, the humiliation and belittlement of his research, which is entirely for the benefit of humanity, Jones is consumed by pervasive apathy and depression, which develops into insanity—he hears the condemning voices of these scientists, lies on his bed and stares at the ceiling, and even the sexual advances of his beloved cannot bring him back to life. At one point, using a dangerous razor, Jones commits suicide by cutting his veins. This fact served as a catalyst for Soledad, who, as far as I understand, had feelings for Jones that were far from platonic, but rather full of passion and earthly pleasures, causing real suffering due to their dissatisfaction, the beginning of another mental disorder, which resulted in a burning desire for revenge, accompanied by preliminary seduction and sexual contact.

Soledad Miranda, who already looks mysterious and enigmatic with her beautiful face, strides stately and even proudly into the personal space of her husband's offenders, radiating an energy that draws you in (I say this both about the actress and the character she plays). I want to admire this woman, who reminds me of Barbara Steele in some way (although one of the doctors called her vulgar).

As I said, the heroine engages in sexual contact with her victim, which the cameraman, who loves close-ups and focusing on the actors' faces, allows us to enjoy smoothly and slowly (I really like this approach). After some intimate caresses, as a rule, a stabbing murder with a knife or scissors follows, followed by the cutting off of the penis. There is also a lesbian scene where the victim is suffocated with a pillow. However, nothing bloody or sophisticated is to be expected (although the detective at the end of the film talks about a bloody mess). The director revels in the very fact of revenge, in the feeling it evokes in the heroine's entire being. Sexual attraction, revenge, feelings of sadness and anguish... and that idiotic music - it's all mixed together. Well, the most stylish and emotionally intense scene is probably when the naked Soledad, sitting on the sofa in the semi-darkness with her arms wrapped around her knees, is tormented by this mixture of lost love, burning desire for sexual satisfaction, and cruel revenge. And this mixture permeates the entire film, creating a certain atmosphere.

Knowing that Franco's films often focus on sexuality and pathological manifestations of the human psyche and, at the same time, often deserve negative reviews and low ratings, I don't want to say anything bad about this film. It is a melancholic story, sometimes even creating an impression of abandonment and desolation (such as the shots of Soledad against the backdrop of the sea. And the sound of the surf is still present in some of the sex scenes). But the idiotic rhythmic and cheerful music at moments when it seems completely out of place ruins a lot. And again, I would like to note the mysterious beauty of the lead actress, Soledad Miranda. The actress, who had Gypsy and Portuguese roots and Spanish citizenship, died in a car accident at the young and exciting age of 27.
