User Review
An excellent Gothic film by Riccardo Freda. It is about a dying count whose wife is unfaithful to him. Overall, it is almost in the style of Chekhov, Tolstoy, and Balzac. The horror builds gradually. The castle exudes malice and treachery. The detective-mystery element intensifies with each episode. Then comes the dénouement, the explanation of the villainy, and, as usual in Chekhov, the characters turn out to be petty and cowardly. A man appears, demanding retribution...
Everything is fine, except for the final twist, which completely threw me off track. It's like a teenage ending from a horror story about a black hand. The hero turns away and the hand disappears. I'm lowering my overall rating of the film because of the banal denouement. Of course, evil must be punished, but not so stupidly. Chekhov would never have allowed himself such an ending. It's on the level of bad folklore, like when the queen saw that the princess was still alive and died of anger. Minus points for the childish ending, but let the review still be green.
