From worldwide fame to sinful depths—John Forbes Nash Jr. experienced it all firsthand. A mathematical genius, at the dawn of his career he did titanic work in the field of game theory, which practically revolutionized this branch of mathematics and brought him international fame. However, at the same time, the arrogant Nash, who was popular with women, received a blow that turned his own life upside down—doctors diagnosed him with paranoid schizophrenia. Only after many years of struggle did he manage to overcome his illness and finally receive the well-deserved Nobel Prize.

Once upon a time, Russell Crowe, a little-known actor, arrived in America to shoot the sensational western ‘The Quick and the Dead’. The film was a huge box office flop, despite its star-studded cast, and Russell Crowe began looking for new work. Just two years after that film, Russell landed the lead role in what turned out to be the best detective film of the last decade. It was this year, 1997, that marked the beginning of Russell Crowe's “golden age,” which lasted until 2003's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. All the films released during this period starring Russell Crowe collectively garnered 46 (!!!) Oscar nominations and were all contenders for best picture of the year, with both ultimately winning. Truly, it was a grand time for a great actor.

Once upon a time, Ron Howard, a little-known filmmaker, played the lead role in American Graffiti, without which George Lucas' Star Wars would not have been made, and Howard himself began to hone his directing skills. However, it seems that he cannot decide on a signature genre, which means that the balance between the quality and success of his films cannot be stable. Nevertheless, according to my calculations, his films have received 34 nominations, which is not bad.

And then one day, two undoubtedly outstanding personalities were brought together by one film, which became the best directorial work of Howard's career and the best acting performance of Russell's career: A Beautiful Mind. Howard made a drama that was perfect in every sense and a perfect biopic, albeit with some inaccuracies. And just as the film's protagonist discovered a new formula and theory in mathematics, Howard discovered a formula for the genre. A formula that contributed to three final points: the film grossed a simply fabulous box office for a film of this genre, viewers loved the film, and academics saw it as the perfect example of the main film of the year.

A Beautiful Mind became the perfect drama not because the film itself is quite dark, shot in greenish-gray tones, not because it has such a heavy mood in the narrative, and not even because of how all the characters' experiences, their suffering, and

their inner world, but largely thanks to the actors, who were able to convey the film's powerful dramatic atmosphere so strongly.
Russell Crowe's performance is damn brilliant. Throughout the entire film. Right from the start, even when he meets all his classmates. Although he was quite a bit older than Adam Goldberg or Josh Lucas. His phenomenal performance was reflected in the “abnormal” side of his character. His best scene here is, of course, in the finale. Such a transformation of his voice and facial expressions, the makeup... the perfect role. Why didn't he win an Oscar? Why did they stop awarding it twice in a row after Hanks? Crowe deserved it, and maybe even more than Hanks.
Jennifer Connelly is just as good as Russell. Although it's funny to read comments like “it's harder to play the wife of a sick person than the sick person himself,” she fit the role perfectly. And she deserved the Oscar too. It's a shame that after A Beautiful Mind, she stopped showing her talent with the same enthusiasm, although, of course, this also affected Russell. A Beautiful Mind cursed two brilliant actors, creating perhaps the best love story on screen, because neither the duos “Hoffman-Streep,” “De Niro-Streep,” nor “O'Toole-Hepburn” played that way and never will.

The supporting characters are also good. Both Paul Bettany and Ed Harris portrayed their characters wonderfully, as required, and Bettany and Connelly tied the knot thanks to this film. Special thanks to the animator who was able to create unique special effects. They are unique because the average viewer simply does not notice them. For example, the changing seasons around Russell's house look original. Or the pigeons that do not move - that's also graphics. And simply, beautiful visual design, like the crystal piece that Russell's character gives as a gift. The makeup, as almost the most important component of the film, was able to perfectly “implant” Russell and, conversely, “spoil” Connelly and Lucas. And, of course, without James Horner's musical score, the film would not have been so powerful.

The result is the best biographical film ever made. It is a perfect drama with brilliant acting. Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly will never perform like this again. The film is not worth watching too often. It is better to watch it once every two or three years, so that the best impression is preserved. A wonderful film.
