I was pleasantly surprised to see two actors I really like in the movie: Keanu Reeves and Kiefer Sutherland. Both gave strong performances, and I found the plot entertaining. I don’t regret the time I spent watching it.
Generally speaking, school movies are interesting in and of themselves, and *The Brotherhood of Justice* falls squarely into that category. That said, I will note that the students are quite grown-up, but that didn’t detract from the overall plot. I think every school has had at least a few vandals who saw their purpose in life as causing chaos and damaging property. That’s pretty much what happens in the movie—bullies everywhere, the police are sick of tracking them down, and the principal is so fed up with putting up with it that he asks the upperclassmen to set an example for all the students to behave with dignity. That’s pretty much where the story begins.
Derek and his friends, having listened to the principal’s speech, decide to restore justice at the school—and beyond its walls—by teaching a lesson to all those who dealt drugs, bullied innocent people, stole, and did other bad things. They chose a very fitting name for their group: “The Brotherhood of Justice.” After teaching one troublemaker a lesson, our heroes get carried away, thinking they’ve got this in the bag, and that they can keep “dispensing justice” from here on out. Knives and other weapons come into play, and eventually, Derek realizes what his scheme has turned into. But he is too well-mannered and noble to let a tragedy unfold.
Overall, the movie isn’t bad, and I liked the plot with its deeper meaning—something many people seem to forget these days. After all, it’s worth thinking about our responsibility, and not everything we do, believing it to be right, is necessarily the truth. Perhaps we shouldn’t take on too much and should leave it to those who have the authority to handle the problem. But then again, that’s just a simple truth.
I liked Billy Zane’s performance, and, actually, when I spotted him in the film, I immediately realized that his role here, as always, was a villain. That didn’t change my opinion of him, though—he’s a very talented actor.
Verdict: “Brotherhood of Justice”, in my opinion, is a film about what happens when someone sets themselves up as judge over everyone else. It’s worth thinking through your actions, and if you’re going to come up with a brilliant idea for restoring peace, think several times about the consequences. A rather original film.
