An eight-year-old girl asks her neighbor to kill the monster under her bed. According to the girl, the monster ate all the members of her family.

User Review

Aurora is a girl who imagines monsters lurking under the floor, whose parents don’t seem loving to her, and whose neighbor, she believes, knows how to deal with monsters. This is the basic premise of the story.

It’s a colorful, fairy-tale-like, cartoonish setup that perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the story, which is presented as fantasy. I agree with those who saw parallels with *Amélie*—yes, the cinematography and color palette are very similar, and that’s great, since it uses the same technique as Jean-Pierre Jeunet, though somewhat more sparse, as the story itself is somewhat sparser (within this framework).

But for a feature-length debut, Brian Fuller, in my opinion, still did his best. Both visionaries and simply lovers of beautiful imagery will be satisfied.

The story itself: it will, in principle, captivate you, provided you haven’t read the negative reviews that people historically (and I’m a slave to this moment myself) leave without understanding… or “misunderstanding”… and so on—the essence.

The essence, it seems, is as clear and simple as day

So what is it? Parents, as we all remember from our “happy” childhoods (well, happy, if most of us didn’t have one), always threatened us, their beloved children: if you don’t go to bed properly, the bogeyman will come and bite your ear; if you don’t behave, Santa won’t bring you a present; “If you misbehave, the bogeyman will take you away,” and so on and so forth.

This is portrayed with surprising accuracy by Sigourney Weaver’s character, who also plays a mother—one who doesn’t like her son calling her that, because it’s “painful” for her. But for us, it’s important!

What’s more: she doesn’t consider children to be fully-fledged, REAL BEINGS (Weaver played this scene brilliantly!) Although in the first scene where her character appears, she might surprise you even more.

Do you recognize your own childhood? And it was with these scary stories that those ADULTS used to frighten us... well, that’s all we see.

And this is where Fuller’s philosophy comes in—perhaps it’s not us who should threaten the children, but rather they (the children) must defend themselves against us, the real monsters, by creating in their divine (which is why Aurora’s childish eyes see the world in such vivid colors) vision of their own “monster,” one that would simply protect their GREAT COLORFUL WORLD from our—the adults’—pale, gray, world-killing color?

Aurora is the goddess of the morning dawn, bringing daylight to gods and humans. And we lack that light right now. That is why, behind each one (if you looked closely), runs your dusty rabbit.
