Martin (Ewan McGregor), a young college student, takes a job as a night watchman at a morgue to earn some extra money. He considers the job to be easy and safe—until the bodies of young women, brutally murdered by a serial killer, start arriving at the morgue, and some truly terrifying events begin to unfold there.

Ulle Bornedal’s film, a remake of his debut feature, nevertheless has advantages over the original, primarily thanks to its cast, which includes—in addition to Ewan McGregor—Nick Nolte, Patricia Arquette, Brad Dourif, and Josh Brolin, all of whom delivered simply stunning performances.

By choosing a hospital morgue as the main setting, the director risked turning the film into banal trash, but the truly solid, unexpected, and genuinely suspenseful screenplay has made the film well worth watching even today. I’m sure most viewers will be surprised by the plot development and its twists, in the best Hitchcockian tradition.

Although "Nightwatch" doesn’t quite qualify as a full-fledged horror film (it’s more of a psychopathological detective thriller), it’s worth watching, as it’s a truly high-quality, surprisingly organic, and eerie film that has been all but forgotten at this point.
