I can’t remember the last time I walked out of a movie theater wanting to shout about a film and discuss it with people. At a time when movie theaters are showing nothing but third-rate horror movies, unfunny comedies, and superhero movies that are already making me sick, *Michael* has been a ray of light.
The story revolves around the Jackson family and The Jackson 5, led by their father, who was determined to achieve great success and make money, forgetting that they were, first and foremost, his sons—all while charting Michael’s path as he embarks on his solo career.
I want to address right away the criticism that the film is “sterile”—a charge many level against it. Perhaps that’s true, but this is first and foremost a feature film, not a documentary. We’re shown how Michael, overcoming the challenges posed by his father, expresses his emotions through lyrics he wrote himself, sharing them with fans whom he considers his family.
I don’t understand all the complaints that the film didn’t show the scandals surrounding Neverland Ranch. Yes, they are part of the pop icon’s biography, but that would have robbed the story of its magic—a story in which Michael is portrayed as a child who dreamed of becoming a solo artist. All these scandals could be skillfully incorporated into a sequel, which would address them all and add even more drama to the film.
Michael Jackson’s story is incredibly moving; and many moments in his life bring tears to your eyes—such as the conversation with his mother, who asks him about real friends, whom he had replaced with animals, and Michael, as a child, replies that he isn’t like the others, who see him as a lifeless person, staring at him and taking pictures. Or how often he visits children in hospitals, with whom he talks sincerely and offers encouragement.
Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, embodies him so perfectly that, beyond their physical resemblance, his fluidity and flexibility make you believe you’re watching Michael Jackson himself, compelling you to give a standing ovation every time he performs the Moonwalk or other dance moves characteristic of the artist.
The film’s musical score is electrifying and evokes a flood of emotions and goosebumps, allowing you to immerse yourself in that era and feel like that very drop in the ocean as you sit in the theater, believing that you are part of that frenzied energy at the concerts. And these feelings evoke genuine joy—and, however you look at it, a sense of sadness that, in reality, you’ll never actually be a part of it. There’s no point in talking about the makeup, costumes, and sets; everything has been recreated exquisitely and at great expense.
The final act, in which Michael declares himself to be the light and wants to speak to the whole world, to give love and joy, and to heal—that’s the truth. That’s the whole point, and he believes in it with all his soul—and along with him, you believe it too. All those people who attended the concerts of such a great legend—weeping tirelessly with joy, fainting, declaring their love—isn’t that the very light mentioned in the first paragraph? I’ll answer: it is. And after that, do people want to shift their focus to scandals? Personally, I don’t. I want to savor all the magic that this man gave to the whole world. It’s nice to remember someone like Michael Jackson, even after so many years.
It’s a shame that this kind of music has died out; many people like this style, and the fact that so many don’t choose this kind of music is a shame.
