Falling Down 4K 1993 Ultra HD 2160p

On the day of his daughter's (Joey Singer) birthday, William "D-Fens" Foster (Michael Douglas) is trying to get to his estranged ex-wife's (Barbara Hershey) house to see his daughter. He has a breakdown and leaves his car in a traffic jam in Los Angeles and decides to walk. Along the way he stops at a convenience store and tries to get some change for a phone call but the owner, Mister Lee (Michael Paul Chan), does not give him change. This destabilizes William who then breaks apart the shop with a baseball bat and goes to an isolated place to drink a coke. Two gangsters (Agustin Rodriguez & Eddie Frias) threaten him and he reacts by hitting them with the bat. D-FENS continues walking and stops at a phone booth. The gangsters hunt him down with their gang and shoot at him but crash their car. William goes nuts and takes their gym bag with weapons proceeding in his journey of rage against injustice. Meanwhile Sergeant Martin Prendergast (Robert Duvall), who is working on his last day before retirement, is following the wave of crimes and believes that the same man is responsible but the other detectives do not pay attention to him.

The film’s visual world is very distinctive. It really feels as though the story isn’t set in Los Angeles, but in a modern metropolis.

They say that everyone senses the approach of death. At least, Douglas William’s character decided he was going to die soon, and found himself in the position of a man with nothing to lose and nothing to fear. This man’s heart hasn’t grown hard, unlike the hearts of those he encounters along the way. He is deeply repulsed by lies and hypocrisy.

But capitalist culture is built entirely on lies. Every advertisement is a lie. The hamburger depicted on a poster looks twice as thick as the real thing. A store owner sets the price of a can of Coke by eyeballing a customer’s ability to pay. Instead of begging humbly, a panhandler lies through his teeth and brazenly demands a bribe. A McDonald’s manager, with a smile from ear to ear mandated by his job, mocks customers from the bottom of his heart. A mentally unstable fascist runs a gun shop.

Two gangsters of Mexican descent threaten William with a knife, demanding money; when he fights back, they shoot at him with an automatic weapon and wound several innocent bystanders. After that, William can’t take it anymore and shoots one of the gangsters in the leg with the gangster’s own gun. Then things get really interesting. This gangster’s girlfriend tells the police about William: “Arrest this BEAST!”

William’s ex-wife tells the police that he’s a sadist. When they ask if he often beat her, she replies: “He never laid a finger on me, but he had SUCH EYES!” It seems to me that if William had been born in another country, he would have become someone like Che Guevara and built communism. But capitalist culture has sapped his strength, and he’s withdrawn into himself. He needs nothing more than to see his daughter and try to regain his former happiness…

Another character in the film, DuVall, is the embodiment of compassion and kindness (much like Gerdt’s character in *The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed*). The branch manager considers him a softie, which he tells him in front of everyone. But in the end, DuVall proves to be both more perceptive and more courageous than all his colleagues, once again proving the great paradoxical truth: the weak are destined to win, while the strong are destined to lose.

The film has a powerful climax that will leave no one indifferent.
"Falling Down" is the most profound and moving of all Schumacher’s films.
