A Star Is Born (2018) — Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut, in which the hard-partying country-rock star Jackson Maine (Cooper) meets an unknown singer named Ally (Lady Gaga) in a bar and helps her break into the big time. As she rises to superstardom, he spirals rapidly into alcoholism and depression, and their relationship turns into a tragic head-on collision.

The film is carried by the powerful chemistry between Cooper and Gaga: both deliver convincing performances, and the musical numbers are shot as if the viewer were standing right on stage. As a director, Cooper opts for an intimate, almost documentary-style approach, which makes the drama feel particularly intense.

The plot is predictable (this is already the fourth film adaptation of the same story), but the soundtrack, Gaga’s vocals, and the emotional punch of the finale make the film well worth watching. For an evening with great sound and high quality 4K picture it’s one of the best musical dramas of recent years.
