World War II is over. Amid the general revelry and commotion, Jimmy, who has returned from the front, meets a girl named Francine. Francine is a singer, and before the war, Jimmy was a saxophonist. Their friendship blossoms into love, overshadowed only by one fact—Francine turns out to be more successful in her musical career than Jimmy.

These days, Martin Scorsese casts Leonardo DiCaprio in many of his films, but Robert De Niro used to hold that “sacred” spot. There’s even a movie called "This Boy’s Life", in which both of Scorsese’s favorites play father and son (though, unfortunately, it was directed by someone else).
When I found out that Liza Minnelli stars in the movie *New York, New York*, I initially thought it would be a full-fledged musical. But that’s not quite the case—only a small part of the film can be called a musical, though the movie does run for a full two and a half hours…
So what’s the story about? It’s the tragedy of two musicians in love (a singer and a saxophonist) who get married and are planning to have a child. The tragedy lies in the character played by De Niro, who creates a simply stunning performance! Endlessly jealous and recognizing only his own talent, he reminded me of Marlon Brando in "A Streetcar Named Desire". This stubborn saxophonist simply sends shivers down your spine: at one point, I was horrified to recognize some of his character traits in myself. Old-fashioned attitudes make themselves felt: De Niro’s character simply enslaves the endlessly loving heroine, Minnelli. I think this will be an instructive story for all girls, and it will also be useful for guys to take a look at themselves from the outside…
Almost the entire film consists of brilliant (cheerful, tender, daring, fierce) exchanges between the two protagonists. The rest of the time, the couple performs jazz. And in this combination with the plot, the jazz music takes on very emotional qualities: even a viewer who’s indifferent to jazz will come to love it by the end of the film. So Scorsese’s mission can be considered a complete success.
