The Hot Spot 4K 1990 Ultra HD 2160p
Director Dennis Hopper can’t seem to let go of the theme of wild immorality, but this only serves to enhance this fast-paced and highly sensual thriller, based on Charles Williams’ novel “Hell Hath No Fury.”
For the lead role, Hopper chose the brash Don Johnson—an actor who never received the recognition he deserved for his work on the hugely popular TV series "Miami Vice". Here, he plays neither a cop nor a good guy. Harry Maddox (Johnson), a self-serving, manipulative drifter, thoroughly shakes up a godforsaken little town in Texas. He gets a job at a used-car lot, where he meets two sexually adventurous women.
Gloria Harper (Jennifer Connelly) is a strikingly beautiful young woman who works in some office, while Dolly Harsho (Virginia Madsen) is his boss’s irresistibly seductive wife. Madsen says it’s the kind of town where “you can only do two things,” and one of them is watching TV. Johnson sets out to get close to both women, which is bound to lead to conflict. But there’s something else on his agenda.
It’s absolutely clear that Hopper has incorporated into his work what he learned while collaborating with David Lynch on “Blue Velvet.” “Hot Spot” envelops the viewer in a wave of intense atmosphere; the action unfolds at a deceptively slow pace, steadily building up elements of film noir, and then plunges headfirst into a maelstrom of dark passions and sordid secrets.
User Review
A pretty good thriller. Virginia Madsen is especially good as the scheming wife of an old car dealer. Jennifer Connelly is very young here and stands out only for her rare freshness. Madsen is much more interesting. Even back then, the aging Don Johnson—Melanie Griffith’s husband of two marriages—played a sort of small-town womanizer.
Harry’s complete lack of any moral compass leads him not only to rob a bank and murder a blackmailer, but also to the collapse of his hopes for a bright future with a sweet, innocent girl (Jennifer Connelly). And it’s no surprise that he couldn’t resist the temptation to get under the skirt of the charming Dolly (Madsen). And Dolly isn’t the type to let her prey slip through her claws. Her role is that of a black widow.
The finale is played out simply brilliantly!
