Bill (Gibson) has been dealing drugs for 15 years and wants to “quit.” His childhood friend Nick (Russell) is a police officer, and he’s determined to catch Bill red-handed. Both of them have feelings for Joanna (Pfeiffer), the owner of an Italian restaurant. The romantic subplot fits naturally into the solid framework of an action-adventure thriller, which bears the hallmark of Town (screenwriter of the famous films “Chinatown” and “The Last Detail”). The most interesting thing about this film is its pacing. Robert Town creates a very predictable film with a deliberately measured and calm pace. He masterfully blends the genres of police action, film noir, and surfer movies.

The plot is extremely simple. Two friends—a former drug dealer and a police officer—who get caught up in a complicated case realize that a beautiful woman has come between them.

Robert Town made a deliberate choice of actors, and it is precisely thanks to their performances that the film is so memorable. Mel Gibson plays the lead role. This was the height of his career—you can simply revel in his screen presence.

Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell perfectly complement the atmosphere Town creates. Kurt Russell brilliantly portrays a complex cop, while Michelle Pfeiffer simply comes alive on screen. This role was tailor-made for her.

And Raúl Juliá adds a real touch of character—he was, after all, a highly talented actor.
