Until yesterday I didn't even know this existed. Its a Dennis Hopper vehicle set in Berlin, where Dennis plays a promoter/manager of a new pop synth artist, in the 80's. That certainly ticks a lot of cool boxes. But from the trailer it's presented as Hopper in a supporting role, which is not the case at all.

What makes this movie interesting is that Hoppers character may or may not be based on Malcolm McLaren. I saw that because in this movie, Hopper isn't offering helpful advice or fostering beneficial relationships, for his artist who simply wants to get his music hear. Instead he takes pages right out of McLarens playbook. He instead shapes a narrative of drama and danger around the artist that is entirely fabricated. The artist thinks its all about the music, but Hopper knows its actually all about the narrative. The issue is that Hoppers character is so extreme in the narrative he is creating, the question is whether either one of them can survive?

And for the record this is a highly engaging movie that seems to zip along so fast you will be surprised it ends so abruptly. It seems that Hopper was the Nicholas Cage of the 80's in terms of over the top but highly entertaining performances. And in this you get Hopper turned up to 11.

Worth watching if you are a Hopper fan and an even bigger if you can find it.
