Storyline
Basquiat tells the story of the meteoric rise of youthful artist Jean Michel Basquiat. Starting out as a street artist, living in Thompkins Square Park in a cardboard box, Basquiat becomes a star and a part of Andy Warhol's art world circle. But success has a price, and Basquiat pays with friendships, love, and eventually, his life.

1996. On the shelves of video stores appeared cassettes with tapes with “Perfect Day” “Renton” Mac Gregor from “Trainspotting”, dying from a bullet in his home neighborhood “Butch” Mickey Rourke, burlesque neo-Shakespearean passions from Romeo DiCaprio, the sacrificial fornication of Trier's “Breaking the Wave”, the long goodnight kiss of former hitwoman heroine Geena Davis, and many other characters who became iconic a few years later and were placed in the pantheon of new mythical heroes. One of these heroes did not have to become perhaps only Jean-Michel from Julian Schnabel's movie “Basquiat”. Perhaps it was because the viewer did not want to identify himself with a little-known African-American artist, befriending the New York bohemia and “spoiling” the walls of houses with his graffiti... This happened in those days only with the castrato Farinelli, from the movie of the same name, for subjective reasons of the majority, who did not see the main theme behind the delicate through-line --- the beauty of music. In “Basquiat” primitive art, rocking nakokainenogo Negro, who drew on the dress of his beloved, bought Russian caviar for thousands of dollars and at the same time slept in a box in the park, shone in the opposite sense --- works, paintings are in the background. From the film expected hypertrafficked drug trips as in “Natural Born Killers”, but received only dreams of Jamaican wave over the rooftops of New York, wanted to see a cool type, like Samuel Jackson or Eddie Murphy, and saw a young, still unknown Jeffrey Wright, anticipated hilarious gags in the style of “Do not threaten South Central, drinking juice in your own neighborhood,” but only perplexed to listen to the dialogues of avant-garde 80's .... The audience caught the movie, perhaps, only autonomous piercing soundtrack, where life unfolded in spite of the soft, somewhere even leisurely narration of the biopic, and a brilliant cast, where the veterans of auteur cinema - Dennis Hopper, David Bowie, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Wickott, Garry Oldman, Christopher Walken, Willem Dafoe - shone, now in that sense. And the very story of the rise and dramatic vicissitudes of the ancestor of artistic graffiti and street stencil, noticed by few. This movie is very ambiguous in terms of factuality, however, as well as “Modigliani” with Garcia and “Frida” with Hayek, as part of which “Basquiat” will soon be shown on the big screen in “Artistic” (Moscow) on the night of artists. But, in my opinion, only such a model, where the author's fantasy mixes with real fate and sharpens the traits and deeds of a person, allows to mount an objective video about the metamorphosis of a creative personality....
