A story about the life of a budding folk singer in the music-filled atmosphere of Greenwich Village in 1961. Llewyn Davis is at a crossroads. In the cold of a New York winter, a young man with a guitar tries to make a living through music, but faces obstacles that seem insurmountable—even though some of them are of his own making. Thanks to the help of friends and strangers, Davis, who takes on any job he can find, manages to get by. After stints at a Greenwich Village dive bar and an obscure Chicago club, he lands an audition with music industry titan Bud Grossman—and ends up right back where he started…

User Review

I watched the movie on opening day this year, too. For me, the film’s main strength is the dialogue. It’s witty, funny, cynical, energetic, and captivating—exactly why I love the Coen brothers’ films. The cinematography is also excellent, capturing the melancholic mood of the characters and the city.

The supporting actors really shine in this film:

- Adam Driver, who’s slow on the uptake and absurd—in a good way. Plus, he perfectly pulls off the role of a backup singer and makes a bunch of weird sounds; the scene where they’re recording a song in the studio is my favorite part of the movie;

- John Goodman—he’s inimitable and repulsive; whenever he appears on screen, he completely steals the show and radiates tons of energy;

- Max Casella—his character is a source of raunchy jokes, perfectly suited to the time and place;

- the ginger cat, of course. There’s nothing to describe here—cats are a surefire trick.

Oscar Isaac is on screen most of the time. He looks good on camera, plays the guitar and sings great, but I didn’t really warm up to him. He’s an ambiguous character, drifting from one fringe of life to another.

The film has an uneven pace: it’s engaging in the first half, drags during the road trip sequence, and never quite reaches a climax in the ending. The protagonist’s hopes are dashed time and again and, by the story’s conclusion, simply fade away in a rather mundane way.

The music is worth mentioning; the film is steeped in folk music, featuring good songs and heartfelt performances. If you’re in a certain sentimental mood, the film might really resonate with you.
