Through the Looking Glass 4K 1976
Through the Looking Glass (1976) is an uncomfortable but mesmerizing hybrid of erotica and psychodrama that is much closer to auteur horror than to conventional adult cinema.
User Review
This is not the kind of movie to put on “for background viewing”: it's slow, visceral, and at times intentionally repulsive, but that's its strength. The story is not about sex, but about how the old trauma of incest eats away at an adult woman's life, turning her desires into a merry-go-round of guilt and self-destruction.
The scenes at the mirror work like therapy sessions from hell: each new passage “behind the glass” blurs the lines between reality and the inner nightmare even further. The closer the denouement, the more obvious it becomes that this is not just a set of shock content, but a rather grim commentary on how violence is passed down the chain - from parents to children.
The movie is clearly not for a general audience: the frankness, incest themes and dated 70s aesthetic easily cuts off those expecting “beautiful retro erotica.” But if you look at it as a dirty, morbid art horror about trauma and obsession, Through the Looking Glass turns out to be a far more serious and memorable work than its reputation would suggest.
