I had seen this movie once, but at that time, except for horror and disgust, it did not arouse anything in me. It must have been in the days of my blossoming youth that I was not interested in the inner world and perverse motivation of serial killers, and the method of its realization on the screen caused an inner protest. However, one single scene is firmly lodged in my memories: glass falls from above on a vigorous, beautiful horse, cutting it into several fragments and then sharply moving apart. Squeezed between the glass pieces of the animal continue to live - pulsating veins, beating heart ... The episode, of course, shocked, but at that moment naturally disgusted.
Now I am less sensitive to the elements of sadism in the movie, I have an ardent, sometimes unhealthy interest in the theme of serial killers, as well as a thirst for non-standard, beautiful solutions in its disclosure. It is very sociopathic to talk about beauty in relation to elaborate murders, but in my opinion, any topic, even the most controversial and repulsive, can be revealed in a visually appealing way. Here, in the movie “The Cell”, the inner world of a homicidal maniac is demonstrated beautifully! There are no other words - magnificent! Bright colors, precise strokes in the spirit of surrealism and postmodernism, the artist of the picture was drawn a wonderful world - a half-fairy-tale, distorted kingdom, which is ruled by a sick psychopathic monster. I've never seen anything like this before! Except for David Lynch, but the style is not the same - here the realm of nightmare with mutilated victims-puppets is depicted in the spirit of fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, here pain neighbors with beauty, even with innocence, which is - a brilliant move that allows you to consider the nature of the killer in the context of duality. He is the executioner, but he is also the victim!
As in the case of most serial killers, the murdered psyche of Vincent D'Onofrio's character is the result of childhood traumas, his father's daily torture, and from this point of view he evokes sympathy. Therefore, in the magic kingdom is represented by a small blond-haired boy, in which the good is not yet fully exterminated. He helps the protagonist to escape from the monster-ruler, whom he desperately fears himself. This monster is the other, dark side of the maniac's personality, the quintessence of perverted cruelty and the pleasure the killer feels in turning girls into disfigured dolls. The terrible and the beautiful coexist side by side, but the reality surrounding them is not similar - the boy is accompanied by sunlight, fragrant plants, animals, but all this withers and dies under the stinking breath of the monster to whom this world is subordinated. This world is in the subconsciousness of the maniac, through its prism he perceives reality.
And reality in “The Cell” is science, through which a person has access to the Looking Glass, on the other side of human nature, in his inner world. A child psychologist working with a child in a deep coma is trying to bring the boy back from his dreams, and to do so, injects his own personality into his subconscious. It's a game. A game according to the rules of the one into whose reality the subject is immersed. This game is dangerous because it is unpredictable, and the stress of the experience can cause the physical shell to fail. If the doctor believes that the fictional world is real and can harm him, the death of the character entails the death of the person himself - the heart can not withstand the pressure. But Jennifer Lopez's character takes that risk. Goes even when the research center with a request for help from the FBI. Psychopathic killer, before falling into a vegetative state, kidnapped another victim, which in the best traditions of “Saw”, must die in a mechanical trap, if it is not saved. And where this trap is, only the killer knows. The woman agrees to the experiment, goes on a dangerous journey, not realizing what awaits her there ...
The movie horrifies, captivates and attracts to the screen thanks to the chosen theme, unusual angle of narration and, first of all, thanks to the incredible imagination of the artist of the picture. The entourage of a scary fairy tale in the best traditions of Guillermo del Toro is perfectly complemented and intertwined with the detective convo of the movie. I applaud the author of the idea, I applaud those who put this puzzle together from hundreds of little things and details! Each piece is priceless and in the right place.
And Jennifer Lopez is good in this serious, far from romantic role. I leave out everything that has nothing to do with her acting - all the publicity, all the garbage - and find her to be a competent, disposable actress. Vince Vaughn, who I dislike, either because of the pleasant voice of the understudy, or for some other reason, in “The Cell” does not cause me antipathy, and Vincent D'Onofrio, who played a maniacal monster, is obviously created for such roles. In the case of him, as with Lopez, I cut off and send to the furnace all his unsuccessful roles, and leave only two of them, in addition to “Cell”. In these two tapes, he is infinitely dear to me; moreover, thanks to the “stuffing” of characters and excellent play of the actor himself, he is beautiful in those roles - “Naked Tango” and “The Whole Wide World.
