John Carpenter's 20th movie.
This movie, if I may say so, ruined John's career. It flopped at the box office, critics and audiences disliked the movie, and what is my opinion? I liked it.
First of all, it's very much a grindhouse movie. I'm serious, read the synopsis for the movie in the voice over from the Tarantino and Rodriguez project jet trailers and you'll see what I mean.
Second, the movie feels more like Doom than the Doom adaptations.
Third, it was just plain fun. It's not every day you see a rapper and a transporter fighting the ghosts of mars, and the drug plays a positive role here. Then there's the oxygen goggles. How do they work? I don't know, but it looks funny.
The acting is weak, although the characters are memorable, four characters to be exact.
The ghosts look like typical heavy rock fans mixed with orcs from 'Lord of the Rings'. And that's not a bad thing. And they are memorable.
The action is quite good and epic, especially for Carpenter, who usually has it weak, even in 'Escape from New York' the most part was not action, but survival of the main character.
The special effects don't look great with such a budget, but they add to the atmosphere of a roadside movie aka grindhouse.
Bottom line is this is a fun movie. If it had been made for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's 'Grindhouse' project, it would have been much better received, but as it is.... You can see for yourself.
