User Review
To Beethoven's first piano concerto, Special Agent Mike Colby fends off an attack by the Raiders (almost entirely stolen from another movie, Battle Beyond the Stars). The corridors of Colby's ship are borrowed from Galaxy of Terror. Roger Corman, producer of all three projects, agreed to entrust his in-house editor Allan Holtzman to direct his own movie, if the latter in a couple of days to come up with a script for the first episode and manage to shoot it before the sets of “Galaxy of Terror” will not be dismantled. Holtzman has completed the assignment.

Once Mike reflects the attack, he is recalled to a secluded research station. During genetic experiments, a problem has arisen that can't be solved without a special agent. The problem, apparently, is that two young female assistants are suffering from a lack of sex while their male companions breed dangerous mutants to prevent a food disaster of galactic proportions. “There are so few new faces on our station!” - the assistants lustfully repeat. One will quench Mike's carnal desires on the first night. The second is going to do the same the next morning, but the sinful solitude in the bathhouse is interrupted by a mutant that has fallen from the ceiling. However, an invulnerable creature walking around the station, eating people and turning them into self-replicating protein bars, is no reason to give up the temptations and simple pleasures of space life.

The languid gaze of Jude Chadwick (the evening assistant) and the marvelous voice of nineteen-year-old Dawn Dunlap (the morning assistant) adorn the film as much as their naked bodies, which Holtzman shows off with a kind of desperate, hopeless stubbornness. The screenplay is written as if it were designed to fit the maximum number of ridiculous behaviors into a minimal running time (the movie lasts 86 minutes). The moments combining silliness and tenderness are the most harmonious. The actor Jesse Vint, who plays Mike, intonationally resembles a plumber from a cheap porno movie: “That's why I love my job!”. Is it worth mentioning that women come to negotiate with the mutant in bathrobes after bathing together in the shower?

The fact that the heroes behave like unintelligent children (and every time forget to put on underwear), does not prevent you from empathizing with them: quite the opposite. You fear for them like hamsters cornered by a hungry boa constrictor. But if the hamsters at least try to hide from the beast, Holtzman's characters tease the beast and go straight into its jaws. The light, sound, and distinctive visuals make this movie an excellent choice for a crazy, sleepless movie party that's meant to escalate into an orgy or, say, a summoning of intergalactic demons; a nonsensical script for such needs is not a vice, but a necessity. Susan Justine's melodic, synthetic compositions lend themselves equally well to the moans of a horny Chadwick, the pained screams of Dunlap, and the roars of alien monsters. The surreal picture is complemented by an outlandish montage that repeats key moments of the movie in the beginning and at the end without a clear purpose. Roger Corman's pastiche based on “Alien” ends on an optimistic note. The heroine with the most beautiful breasts survives. And behind the scenes everything ended well: Allan Holtzman is still shooting and editing documentaries, and Dawn Dunlap returned to her native Texas, lives on a farm and raises emu ostriches.
