Director John Frankenheimer has made a scary movie about a monster that people will continue to laugh at for generations to come, with a basic scary-looking monster, characters as if cut out of cardboard, and a plot silly enough to make it impossible to keep from laughing.
Not for the first time, the real villain is careless humanity. Only this time it's not radioactive fallout from nuclear explosions creating giant killer cockroaches, but industrial pollution.
Among the characters, only Armand Assante as the Indian chief gets half a chance to show off his talent, and Talia Shire's role is reduced to a whimper. The musical accompaniment constantly deceives the viewer, preparing him for something terrible, but this terrible thing does not happen.

Why Frankenstein? Well, it's not just because of the consonance. It's just that this movie is weird. How to tell you - like Frankenstein's Monster, it is made of several dead pieces, which, when put together, manage to breathe and move. Judge for yourself - a lame plot about a mutant monster created by pollution of nature - and where there is pollution of nature, there is no less lame plot about investigations at the local paper mill, which pollutes, in fact, the water. In the forest live Indians who, of course, need to be mixed up with the city Indians - otherwise it won't be so cliched. And who will be left alive by the end - you can see from a kilometer away. But in what way this picture managed to leave me exclusively positive feelings?

Well, the actors here are quite good. And Talia Shire, for whom the local role became almost the only noticeable one outside of “Rocky”, and her husband played by Robert Foxworth, and the notorious Indians, of whom Armand Assante stood out - all of them fulfill the director's task well and look decent on the screen.

The plot, as it has been already mentioned, is made from scratch, but there are no outright mistakes or stupidity in it, and the line with chemical pollution explains everything quite clearly.

I was a little confused by the special effects, or rather, the makeup. That “sweating” mama bear, that mutant bears looked strange - not outright puppet, in general, the movie looks no more expensive than the famous examples of the genre of those times, and their cost was rarely more than 6 million, so it turns out that the budget figure is suspiciously overstated. Although, the bear attack scenes are quite spectacular - they are not slow, well mounted and quite bloody.

The soundtrack is not particularly memorable, even though Leonard Rosenman is a skillful composer, but there were a couple of beautiful melodies, you can't take that away.

And in the end, it seems that the movie is not a failure, but it's not a good one, either - middle to half. But it does have some sort of soothing atmosphere, it has a cameraman capturing beautiful vistas of nature - and none of that can disconcert the fact that there's a snarling, strange-looking carcass running through the woods somewhere. Just a quiet, peaceful and quite interesting picture. I just can't figure out why it got that title. And, you know, the ending with the “daddy” could have been left out.
