Scott Chambers is doing a great job with his franchise “The Universe of Twisted Childhood.” At first, it all seemed like a joke that didn't promise anything interesting, but now, realizing that we are about to see a crossover — “Poohverse” with all the monsters from this cinematic universe, we can only rejoice that, before our very eyes, thanks to the establishment of characters from old children's fairy tales as public property, a new cinematic universe has been born, tougher than Marvel's!
The story of the maniac Peter Pan tells and shows the most ordinary plot about a mysterious crazy killer in a small town and refers to a crazy number of famous horror movies. The director himself said that he drew inspiration from the films “Blood Harvest” and “Black Telephone,” but after watching the film, I felt like I had seen a patchwork quilt of almost every horror movie I had ever seen. There's a moment reminiscent of Andrés Muschietti's It, a scene almost like the one in the 1978 Halloween, and another like the one in the 2012 Maniac with Elijah Wood. And you can sense that all of this is not just unconscious staging due to the author's own viewing habits, but rather visual references to various representatives of the genre!
But what's even cooler is the maniac. Half the time, he doesn't seem like a horror movie character; he seems to be aware that he's in a horror movie and behaves accordingly, sticking to a memorable image, in our case Peter Pan, because this is a movie after all, and he has to be memorable to the viewer. And right at the beginning, he seems to be inviting us to his “bloody show,” still in the guise of a silent clown. But at one point, he admits that he doesn't give a damn about Netlandia and everything else, literally destroying his own movie image and appearing before us as a real psychopath with a knife and a twisted psyche. Unlike other movie maniacs, such as Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger, who also have disfigured faces, or Michael Myers, who also wore a jumpsuit and killed with knives, you don't feel any real sympathy for him. The thing is, here the maniac is not an image, but a real killer without compassion, obviously killing for pleasure and reluctantly (!) hiding behind some fairy tale story.
And that is the power of such a character. There is a duality to him: on the surface, he is a horror movie hero, but deep down, he is a realistic image of a psychopath driven mad by drugs, who can be far more frightening than a personality embellished by cinematic lore. The most interesting thing is that the character is obviously aware of his image and still indulges it for some reason, as if he knows that we are watching him and tries his best to surprise even the most sophisticated viewers...
The story itself is very classic, even banal in places. It's enough to read the description and the first plot development that your imagination will come up with, which will probably be close to reality. But it was still very interesting to watch what was happening. Thanks to the excellent acting of Megan Placido as Wendy, Martin Portlock as Peter Pan, and Teddy Darnell as, ahem... Tinker Bell. Even the children gave quite an impressive performance: Peter DeSouza-Feihoni as the boy Michael was masterful, his emotions were sometimes even more believable than the others. I also liked the professionally done carnage and the scenes of violence that actively played on phantom sensations. At one point, I thought I was watching a new installment of “The Horror.” Slasher movies have become completely insane these days!
All in all, it's a good movie, excellent for its genre, which captivates with its references, indirect or direct, excellent special effects, and slightly deconstructs the image of the villain in slasher movies. I'll be waiting for new movies in this series.
