The first “The Conjuring” was a really solid horror film, I still remember it—atmospheric, tense, with a good story. The second part also maintained the same level of quality. I didn't watch the third one, but I heard it was mediocre, and people in general didn't particularly appreciate it. The fourth was directed by the same director who made the spin-off about the nanny: the film made a lot of money at the time, but it was banal and forgettable. Here, it's exactly the same situation.
This time, the Warrens are no longer hunting demons. They are retired, give lectures, and seem to have left the business. But according to the plot, a family in trouble really needs their help — and the script starts to stretch the circumstances just to bring the old heroes back to the center of events.
Their daughter appears, who has also inherited the “gift” and can sense evil. Characters familiar from previous installments appear, whom the demons literally force into suicidal acts to push the Warrens to intervene. And gradually it becomes clear: now evil seems to be hunting not random people, but specifically the Warren family.
On paper, this looks like a “logical twist,” but on screen it feels more like a contrived plot device: “we need to come up with a reason to bring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson back.”
The main focus is on screamers and standard scares. They are built on the principle of “something is about to jump out” — and it really does jump out. Several times I caught myself thinking, “Okay, I know, there's going to be a scare now.” And it happened right on schedule.
The images are creepy, there are a couple of unpleasant scenes, but overall, there's nothing new. The film teases us with hints, builds up the atmosphere, but never quite reaches true, unexpected horror.
In the end, it all looks more like a drama about family and aging. The main characters are no longer young hunters of evil: Wilson plays a man with heart problems, Farmiga constantly has visions and hallucinations. A couple of times it seems that something is about to happen to them, but the film only teases us.
By the end, it seems that this part is not about demons at all, but about “generational change.” The Warrens gradually fade into the background, while their daughter and her boyfriend (a former cop) get more screen time. It's like a hint about who will continue the franchise in the future.
To be honest, it's a strange feeling. You go to see a horror movie, and end up watching a family drama with elements of horror. It's not that scary, the story isn't compelling, and there's almost no plot to speak of. There are only everyday scenes, a few rare scares, and a final attempt to “wrap up” the Warren story nicely.
And the ending does look like the story is over, but the film made good money, so the studio will obviously come up with something else. Prequels, spin-offs, new installments — there are many options. Maybe we'll really get a crossover with The Fast and the Furious: the Warren family drives a Dodge Camaro and exorcises demons with NOS.
The bottom line: The Conjuring: Last Rites is not impressive. It offers neither truly scary horror nor a fresh story. Rather, it is just a routine film that relies on recognizable characters. For fans of the universe, it's worth seeing once. For everyone else, it's easy to pass by.
