In Camelford, while swinging his van across a narrow road to make a u-turn, a driver stalls the vehicle that does not restart. Hart Read is driving his motorcycle with his girlfriend Rose and he drives off the road to avoid the collision. Hart suffers minor injuries while Rosie is injured and burned by the flames when the motorcycle explodes. The ambulance from the nearby Keloid Clinic for Plastic Surgery brings the couple and Rose, who is in coma, is submitted to an emergency surgery and to an experimental plastic-surgery technique by Dr. Dan Keloid to retrieve her skin in the chest and abdomen. Hart is discharged but Rose stays in coma in the intensive care unit (ICU) to recover. Out of the blue, Rose awakens from her coma one month later and screams. A nurse helps her but is wounded by her and then he cannot remember what has happened. He is sent to a hospital in Montreal while Rose realizes that she needs to feed with blood. However her victims become zombie-like creatures. Rose flees from the clinic to Montreal to meet her friend Mindy Kent spreading her infection in the big city. Meanwhile Hart is seeking for her.

User Review

‘Rabid’ is a relatively low-budget but nonetheless terrifying horror film by the great Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg. This smiling old man started making movies when my parents were still in kindergarten, and over the next three decades, Cronenberg consistently terrified audiences, releasing one film after another that are worthy representatives of “scary cinema.”

In his film Rabid, Cronenberg touched on the aspect of medical science. There has always been, is, and will always be a lot of controversy surrounding it. Once, in the days of Galen, dissecting corpses was considered not only sacrilegious, but beyond the comprehension of the human mind. Why dig into a dead body? In our world, conservative-minded people are in the majority. Nevertheless, science must move forward. And often this movement is driven not by ordinary therapists, but by people who are so passionate about their work that they are considered a little ‘crazy’. In addition, there are ‘guys’ who look decent on the outside, but what they are doing in their laboratories is unclear. What am I getting at? Well, in the movie ‘Mad Max’, a couple of speed lovers (who decided to ride without helmets) were unlucky. Not only did they get into an accident, but they also ended up with one of these doctors. And while the guy got off lightly, his girlfriend was much less fortunate. But the kind doctor saved her from death. The problem, however, was that he saved her using some kind of progressive methods, which had a certain side effect. The beauty became something like a vampire. Only she drank blood in a very unusual way - from her armpit. What a twist! You'll find out what happened when you watch the movie.
Overall, the cast of the film is not particularly impressive. I don't know why the film was shot in Canada, whether it was for tax reasons or because it is the director's homeland. But it gives the film a certain charm. ‘Horror in the North’ seems somehow livelier than ‘Horror on the Beach’ in sunny Florida. Perhaps I feel this way because winter lasts more than four months here. But let's get back to the actors. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with any of the gentlemen presented, with the exception of Mrs. Chambers. I know her, Merlin Ann Taylor, the face of washing powder and star of the scandalous film ‘Behind the Green Door’, much better than the rest. And Cronenberg managed to get quite a decent performance out of this motley cast, which is very pleasing.

Overall, the film is quite good, but it is noticeable that it was shot somewhat hastily and without the diligence required to create truly “beautiful horrors.” In any case, I recommend watching it, if only to pass the evening in the company of fear.
