User Review

There is probably nothing more consistent and enduring in this world than new Jason Statham movies. The years fly by, yet the actor always stays in top form and is ready to come to the rescue whenever his characters are needed—for the sake of the audience and the fight against injustice.

I suppose one could criticize Statham more than once for a certain one-dimensionality in his roles or the repetitiveness of his storylines, but as paradoxical as it may seem, despite the lack of lasting variety, the actor has managed to become a phenomenon—not just a fleeting flash in the film industry— because whenever a film starring him is released, the audience knows what to expect, and thus receives a kind of guarantee of reliability in advance—that the time and money spent on watching it will certainly pay off, since a template that works effectively has been refined over the years.

“Sanctuary” is no exception in this regard; Statham remains true to himself and the image of a truly tough guy that has formed around him. However, in this new project, the actor moves a bit further away from rigid stereotypes, seemingly opting for a more serious and thoughtful role, occasionally sacrificing action, but in return offering a slightly deeper glimpse into the inner world of the protagonist—Mason—who, alongside Bodhi Ray Bretnak (Jesse), manages to deliver significantly more dramatic moments. Compared to the colorful *The Beekeeper* and the less-than-successful *The Master*, Jason Statham has finally managed to strike a balance between action and drama, where, in addition to his ability to throw punches, some genuine emotion has emerged—a development that undoubtedly benefited the entire story, as it was both enjoyable and quite interesting to watch the events unfold, even though the plot can hardly be called overly original. Bodhi Ray Bretnack is a young but undeniably gifted actress who didn’t just complement the film but at times became a key figure in the entire narrative, pushing Mason into the background—after all, it’s no coincidence that truly exceptional talents are often found among British actors. It is also worth noting that this time, we saw coordination and genuine interaction between the main characters, based on trust and friendship, rather than simply the blind transportation of one individual from one point to another.

I particularly enjoyed the atmosphere in "Shelter"; the film can rightly be called aesthetically pleasing. The story is literally fueled by the cold, gray landscapes of the island nation, the interiors of the houses, the streets, and the rural scenery; all of this sets the tone and, in a way, creates a more realistic and vivid setting that is very British—but in the best possible sense.

This film does not claim to be one of the best or greatest you have ever seen; it is simply another story featuring Statham, told in a fresh way, and, as always, notable for its timeless themes of fighting evil, excessive control, and glaring injustice—this time, merely in slightly different guises and manifestations.
