Bear, an employee at a music store, buys a mysterious toy that grants wishes. He wishes for Nikki, his childhood friend with whom he is hopelessly in love, to return his feelings. The spell works—but leads to terrifying consequences.

User Review

The movie made me reflect on several important topics at once.

The first topic is the lack of open communication between loved ones. It seems to me that many problems could be avoided if people told each other what they truly feel, weren’t afraid of the other person’s reaction, and responded calmly and with understanding. Honesty can prevent many tragedies.

The second theme is who is truly a close person. Do the people around us genuinely care about us, or are they simply using us—emotionally, physically, or psychologically? For me, closeness is impossible without trust. If a person is constantly hiding something, the relationship gradually falls apart. In my opinion, if the main character’s friend had honestly told him about his relationship with their mutual acquaintance, many events might have unfolded quite differently. And in general, if friends had told each other the truth instead of keeping important things to themselves, the film’s ending would most likely have been less tragic.

The third theme is loneliness. Even though the characters are constantly together, each of them is lonely in their own way. Bir has feelings for Nikki but is afraid to admit them. Moreover, his friend doesn’t accept Bir for who he is, causing him to withdraw further into himself. Nikki and Carter are in a relationship and have sex, but there’s no sense of emotional intimacy between them—which is exactly why they’re constantly arguing. Sarah is waiting for a response from her school, but she has no one to share her joy—or possible disappointment—with. Even if the stories of the other characters aren’t fully revealed, there’s a sense that each of them is left alone to deal with their own emotions.

The fourth theme is the uncertainty of feelings and the inability to express them properly. In the film, this is shown through Nikki’s behavior. Yes, the filmmakers deliberately take her emotional reactions to extremes to heighten the tension and unsettle the viewer. But the idea itself strikes me as very real. Sometimes a person experiences anxiety, fear, or inner pain, but instead of openly talking about their feelings, they start to act out aggressively. I’ve encountered something similar in my own life: my partner often expressed anxiety through irritation because she didn’t know how to show it any other way.

The fifth theme is obsession and intrusive thoughts. After hearing a friend’s suggestion about a possible connection between Nikki and her father, Bir begins to fixate on this idea more and more. He interprets any change in the girl’s behavior as confirmation of his suspicions. That’s exactly how obsessive thoughts work: once you plant a seed of doubt in your mind, it starts looking for evidence to support itself, even where none exists. Yes, one could argue that the film is about something else, but personally, this is the message I took away. The filmmakers deliberately make the events frightening to show just how destructive a single idea can become if allowed to completely take over one’s mind.

The sixth theme is: fear your own desires. This is by no means a new idea. We’ve encountered it in all sorts of works—from the story of Aladdin’s lamp to "The Wish" and "Supernatural". However, here it unfolds in its own way: sometimes the fulfillment of a wish turns out to be far more terrifying than the wish itself.

I’d also like to highlight a visual technique that particularly stuck with me. In many scenes, Nikki is shown in shadow, and the viewer can barely make out her facial expression. It struck me that this was no accident. During arguments and intense conflicts with a loved one, it’s as if we stop seeing their true self. Instead of a face, all that remains before us is emptiness—cold, all-consuming, and gradually killing the feelings that once bound people together. Kudos to the actors for their excellent performances; the sound designer and director did a great job of conveying the atmosphere.
