That’s exactly how the movie is being marketed here. I went in expecting something in the vein of *Nobody* and even caught myself thinking, “Could this be a sequel?”—but no, it’s a standalone story. It’s actually surprising that *Nobody* and *Normal*—both from the creators of *John Wick*—turned out to be so different.
The first third of the film is very slow and monotonous—just like the city we’re shown. The plot gradually picks up steam, with the suspense building around a single catalytic event. The film tries a bit to be a mystery. Plot devices—guns, shotguns, and axes—are carefully set up. This part lacks any real anchors, hooks, or memorable moments. It’s just a series of slightly strange, mundane dialogues, one after another. You sense that something strange is happening, but somehow without any real intrigue.
And then everything shifts abruptly. The film suddenly changes genres, turning into that very same dark action-comedy. And this is where things get interesting—and a little unsettling.
It’s as if the film is afraid of itself. At times it’s bold and lively, and at other times it suddenly turns into something almost PG-13. Because of this, the action doesn’t always push the envelope. In one scene, you’re treated to a fight and gunfire, shown in vivid detail; in the next, there’s a minimum of damage and destruction.
Then there’s a Tarantino-esque vibe, but on the low end.
There’s absurdity, there’s humor, there’s energy, but it lacks boldness. It brings to mind *From Dusk Till Dawn* and *Faster Than a Bullet*—but in those films, the filmmakers went all the way; here, it’s as if they’re constantly holding back. Here, the characters exchange strange and funny lines, but it doesn’t always land well—it’s not always funny. Some scenes feel underdeveloped or dragged out.
Bob Odenkirk himself is more focused on drama than action here. Here, he’s more like a character from Die Hard than an undercover agent. And that has an impact, too—after *Nobody*, you can’t help but expect something different. Although the writer teases us by suggesting that our sheriff isn’t so simple, it remains just a wink, much like the strange scenes with the moose, which are meant to add some depth to the story.
The bottom line: a pleasant, at times lively movie for an evening. It doesn’t pretend to be anything grand. If you like Odenkirk, you’ll enjoy it. But don’t expect nail-biting action, and then you’ll get satisfaction from watching it.
