30 Days of Night 4K 2007

In Alaska, winter days are no different from nights—nothing but darkness. And it goes on like this for a whole month. There would be nothing unusual about this if forces of evil—vampires—weren’t creeping out of the familiar darkness to terrorize the small town of Barrow. With no hope of rescue, minimal supplies, and freezing cold, a small group of people is trying to hold out until dawn. But how can they do that when they still have 30 days of total darkness ahead of them?

The movie turned out to be just the right amount of gory and almost believable.

I liked the vampires—on the one hand, aristocrats in long black cloaks speaking some ancient language; on the other, pigs who never once bothered to wipe their faces after yet another round of tormenting their victim. This is a major departure from classic vampire stories (I’m thinking primarily of Coppola’s *Dracula*)

I liked the ending. It was very sad and unexpected, but at the same time hopeful.

On the downside, I’ll point out the ridiculous showdown between the main characters at the most unnecessary moment. But there’s nothing to be done about that—it’s become an integral part of Hollywood movies.

There are a few small plot holes. I still didn’t understand where the vampires came from, where they went afterward, and, most importantly, what they wanted. Did they just come to eat, or to show people that they’re not just a nightmare? And, of course, the Russian translation was, as always, inaccurate—the characters’ dialogue lacked the necessary nuances.

But overall, I liked the movie, and I don’t regret spending money on the ticket! I recommend it to all horror fans!
