We watched “Project Hail Mary” yesterday, but decided to gather our thoughts and put them into writing here today. It worked out well that we knew very little about the project before watching it. We hadn’t seen any trailers in theaters beforehand, knew absolutely nothing about Andy Weir’s novel, and were only vaguely familiar with the plot. The only thing we knew for sure was that Ryan Gosling was starring in the lead role under the expert direction of the duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the filmmakers behind the two wonderful duologies *21 Jump Street* and *Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse*. A long time ago, they were supposed to shoot and release a movie set in the Star Wars universe, but the eager duo was ousted by the ruthless and merciless Kathleen Kennedy.

And now, a decade later, they’ve managed to bring their project about a galaxy far, far away to life—it seems that this time, no one got in their way or tried to sabotage them.

Amazon MGM Studios allocated the necessary budget, approved Eva Mendes’ husband for the role, and didn’t skimp on the marketing. Full steam ahead—as long as the film’s quality doesn’t let us down! Well, after watching it and spending a day reflecting, we can confidently say that the stunt was a success; the guys didn’t disappoint, though it could have been a bit shorter. There’s just that moment when you sit there thinking, “Okay, this is the end,” only to be tricked. “Alright, that’s definitely the end,” you think—only to be led up the garden path again. Then there’s this scene that seems to lead straight to the ending—whoosh—and they stretch out the enjoyment even further. Be prepared: some people probably won’t like this, but what can you do...

Apparently, Andy Weir’s novel turned out in such a way that the author simply couldn’t bring himself to end it cleanly and abruptly. Overall, the film adaptation turned out to be enjoyable, inspiring, and entertaining, although when there’s constantly just one human protagonist on screen, there’s a risk of the story veering into boredom. Fortunately, as the final trailer proclaims, Ryan Gosling isn’t left completely alone in space—he’s paired with an eccentric alien, which turns two-thirds of the film into a mesmerizing buddy movie with a humanistic twist. You can get a sense of what the extraterrestrial looks like from the trailers, and you gradually get used to him—even if you never quite figure out how a former high school physics teacher managed to decipher...

High-tech of the future—what can you do! “Project Hail Mary” turned out to be sentimental, funny, and quite fantastical (so much so that *The Martian* looks almost plausible by comparison). It’s just that we personally didn’t like the title one bit. If you happen to be unfamiliar with the plot, what comes to mind? Catastrophes, destruction, people panicking in the face of total Armageddon. But the original places the emphasis elsewhere, so the sensationalist and tacky “End of the World” is simply misleading. In fact, yes, a reckless humanity, due to the Sun cooling down, is dreading...

the Apocalypse—but thanks to many brilliant minds, they send their last hope into deep space toward the lone star Tau Ceti, the only one that, for some unknown reason, hasn’t been overrun by strange microorganisms, in a quest to find a solution to the equation. Whether they succeed or not, you’ll find out for yourself at the theater or online.

The main thing is that you’ll understand a lot of it; you won’t need specialized knowledge in various fields to clearly follow the thoughts of the professional actors and actresses, whose characters, looking all smart, discuss terms that only they understand. And here, Ryan Gosling, with his golden retriever looks, fits the bill perfectly. A clumsy, shy, insecure middle-aged man who resisted to the very end...

Stepping out of his comfort zone, out of his shell, even when a threat loomed over all of humanity. And as the plot unfolds, he discovers extraordinary qualities within himself that had long been hidden. The coolest thing is that they didn’t invent some random loved ones back on Earth who would, from a distance, provide the main character with strength and emotional support while he’s out there trying to do something near Tau Ceti with his new buddy. He’s a true outcast—someone you wouldn’t mind sacrificing, but who won’t give up easily. Gosling, the “meme man,” managed to make this character tangible—you believe in him, he doesn’t drive you crazy, and you root for him until the very end. He’s been a neo-Nazi, a criminal driver, a jazz fan, a gangster hunter, a man in love—and now he’s managed to give us...

...the audience a likable scientist, in whose hands and mind the fate of all humanity rests. Well, it’s spring now, it’s gotten warmer, there’s plenty of sunshine, and “Project Hail Mary” has fit perfectly into the release schedule to offer hope right now, make you smile, and let you enjoy the view of the planet Tau Keta E. And what about that cute alien who was featured in the trailer? I don’t feel like going into detail about him—as they say, it’s better to see for yourself how he appears and how the relationship between these two very different species will unfold. The main thing is, it’ll be fun and touching. Of course, it’s just a fairy tale, but let’s believe in miracles a little bit in our current times. After all, people shouldn’t fear an invasion from outside, but themselves. Peace is already on the horizon...
