Van Damme, playing Detective Louis Burke, goes undercover as an inmate at Harrison Prison, notorious for its brutal conditions. His mission is to find out who is behind a series of brutal murders of inmates. His only visitor is a lawyer (Gibb) posing as his wife. Soon, he earns respect with his fists and feet, and a Black prison veteran (Guillaume) begins to help him, risking his own neck in the process. When word gets out in the prison that he’s a cop, Burke’s enemies set the ruthless psychopathic killer “Sandman” on him. But Burke isn’t just a cop. He’s a kung fu master…

User Review

I’ve probably watched and rewatched this movie dozens of times; every time I watch "Death Warrant" it fills me with a flood of emotions and lifts my spirits. And why wouldn’t it? It’s such a standout film—one you simply can’t say anything bad about. As they say, it’s got it all: fast-paced action and intense fight scenes? You got it! Want to see something special, yet so realistic and believable that it takes your breath away? No problem! Looking for excitement, a gripping plot, and unexpected twists? That’s all here, too! In short, 1990 marked the very heyday and peak of popularity for actor Jean-Claude Van Damme, who plays the lead role in the film.

A brief synopsis: The film tells the story of police officer Louis Burke, who goes undercover at the maximum-security “Harrison” prison to find out as much as possible about a series of mysterious murders and the disappearance of inmates.

Upon entering the prison, Louis realizes that this is clearly no paradise—he immediately senses the guards’ secretiveness and brutality, their excessive abuse of power, and eventually notices that they are in cahoots and engaged in shady dealings. However, Louis subsequently finds himself, against his will, caught up in the very maelstrom of events.

And now, knowing what’s going on here and what terrible secrets lie behind the walls of “Harrison,” Louis must escape from prison and report all these shady dealings to his superiors. But to do so, he’ll have to endure a series of ordeals and trials—confrontations and a struggle for survival in prison, demonstrating resilience and composure in the face of all manner of attacks and the guards’ tyranny, and, finally, an encounter with a mysterious and likely unsavory character nicknamed “The Sandman”...

Indeed, just by looking at the plot alone and delving into its essence and content, you clearly realize that the film is truly good and worth watching, and the participation of such a major star as Jean-Claude Van Damme only confirms this and leaves no room for doubt. Indeed, in the prime of his life and career, with all his fame, popularity, and worldwide acclaim, it would have been hard for Van Damme not to attract crowds of fans interested in his work, not to mention critics and the press themselves. How could anyone simply pass up yet another hit and a new action movie starring Jean-Claude? Back then, for any teenager or action movie fan, that would have been a veritable nightmare—one that no one wanted to see come true.

After all, everyone who felt it necessary to evaluate, acknowledge, and prove once again to themselves and others that Jean-Claude is not only famous and popular but also someone who deservedly—and, most importantly, on his own—reached such unattainable heights and became a movie star undoubtedly rushed to watch “Death Warrant” as soon as possible. Well, it must be noted that the expectations, hopes, and desires were fulfilled; what was expected to be a typical action movie turned out to be much more—a classic action film that fully lives up to its reputation, and believe me, a great deal of effort, energy, hard work, dedication, and skill was poured into its creation and filming to the fullest extent. As you can see, the result speaks for itself: the film is truly a success—very interesting and gripping, intriguing and thrilling right up to the very last seconds and moments of the final climax!

In conclusion, I’d like to note that the film benefited from the participation of director Deran Sarafyan—a well-known figure with a deep understanding of filmmaking—the screenplay by David S. Goyer, who is no less familiar to the public, and, of course, and our favorite actors, led by Jean-Claude Van Damme, who contributed significantly to the film’s success during production. Finally, dear viewer, I would advise you to watch and evaluate the film for yourself, reflect on it personally, and draw your own conclusions regarding this movie—and indeed, Van Damme’s entire body of work and talent. Don’t hesitate—enjoy the film, because you’re guaranteed a pleasant and, at the same time, rewarding experience in front of the screen!
