Violent street gangs in Los Angeles have found a new way to settle scores and divide up territory. Instead of contract killings, they engage in deadly races in modified cars with souped-up engines, driving at breakneck speeds, where the adrenaline-fueled line separating life on wheels from death in a gasoline inferno is so thin. A young undercover cop infiltrates one of the gangs and becomes a street racer himself to gain the criminals’ trust and shed light on a series of mysterious and daring hijackings of trucks carrying valuable cargo. Amid suspicion and lies, he doggedly pursues his goal… at full throttle!

It’s always a pleasure when a movie turns out to be about something other than what the genre dictates, and action films usually benefit when the filmmakers focus on more than just explosions and shootouts. And in the first installment of the popular “Fast & Furious” franchise—which has now expanded to a dozen films— (actually, a literal translation of the title would be something like “Fast and Furious”), the leading roles are not played by the late Paul Walker or the still-living Vin Diesel, but by Her Majesty, Speed. The crew of the fearsome street racer Dominic Toretto, who make their living by robbing trucks while they’re still moving—sometimes at speeds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour—view their unsavory trade not so much as a way to make relatively easy money, but rather as a unique form of sport (if not more—in one scene, the protagonist’s intense interest in his car is even likened to his sexual passion for his girlfriend). These thrills bring both heroes and antiheroes a dizzying sense of freedom, and along with it, perhaps, a certain inner liberation from the fear of death, which, even if it does pay an unwelcome visit, will at least arrive quickly and suddenly, sparing its victim prolonged suffering and the agonizing wait for the inevitable end.

And one cannot fail to give credit to the skill of the filmmakers, who, in staging the climactic scenes (spanning roughly the last half-hour of screen time), demonstrated extraordinary ingenuity and transformed what might seem like ordinary “chases” into a truly memorable and impressive spectacle. The dizzying effect is due not only—and not so much—to the impressive budget, but to a greater extent to clever camera angles and energetic editing. And the excellent scene of the final heist—which, of course, takes place at breakneck speeds—not only takes your breath away but also allows us, the audience, to experience alongside the characters those whirlwind emotions that come from the sensations of Flight, Speed and Height—the very things for which these brave madmen are willing to risk their lives again and again.

True, as they say, you still have to make it to the climactic scene. And for the most part, the film is ultimately disappointing, telling the story of a rather mundane and overused conflict between passion and duty, and attempting to entertain the less discerning viewer with an abundance of “cool,”
cars painted in bright, combat-inspired colors, and uninhibited women, some with a pair and others with the full quartet of spherical assets (assets that, of course, please me as a man but annoy me as a viewer, especially when the director clearly overdoes it). So the two parts of the film—roughly up to the “golden ratio” point and beyond—differ in quality just as much as the amount of hair on the heads of the two lead actors differs in quantity. I wonder—could it be that Vin Diesel’s character emerged victorious from the very first race in the film precisely because his hairstyle is more aerodynamic?
