User Review
As perhaps the last bastion of stability in our world hurtling toward who knows where, Jason Statham delights us with his appearances on the big screen, thanks to his enviable consistency and the unwavering spirit he brings to his roles.
While taking on new roles each time, Statham remains true to himself and to the carefully crafted image that fits him perfectly—one that clearly corresponds to every step of his career ladder, his skills, and, let’s face it, the actor’s age—as he increasingly appears not as top-tier specialists, but rather as once-seasoned heroes now retired, yet having lost none of their abilities over the years. Jason Statham, both now and in the past, is definitely well-suited to the action genre he’s chosen; he’s still just as agile and nimble, and capable of teaching all the villains a well-deserved lesson.
This time, the film’s action shifts its setting, so to speak, and unfolds at sea. “Mutiny” is very reminiscent of action-adventure films from the ’90s, when the plot moved at a breakneck pace and the heroes operated on the principle of “less talk, more action”—so the nuances and pitfalls will be revealed as the story unfolds, sometimes only in passing, but one thing is clear—the protagonist simply must save everyone; that is his direct obligation to the screenwriters. Looking exclusively at the film’s plot, you can see how it brings together a mix of leaders of various kinds and ranks, steroid-fueled thugs, a brave and honest female employee, a couple of antagonists with dubious reputations, a grieving son who never takes a break or a day off, Jason Statham playing himself—this time referred to as Cole Reed, a defender and fighter against injustice—and, just to be safe, a group of valiant Americans who round out this broad spectrum of storylines and characters.
“Mutiny” feels light and effortless, despite the breadth of each character’s incredible talents and its hour-and-a-half runtime. Nevertheless, the film lacks the proverbial “element of surprise,” because despite the variety of plot twists, the story unfolds too predictably and smoothly—which, given all the variables, is practically impossible.
“Mutiny” strives to cover everything under the sun, yet at the same time neglects a number of potential plot directions, focusing solely on a story of revenge—not a specific act of revenge, but rather the thirst for revenge as a phenomenon. The result is a standard, no-frills action movie about Jason Statham’s endless search for his dream job.
