Have you seen *Drag Me to Hell*? Sam Raimi directed it. Remember *The Notebook*? Rachel McAdams starred in it. And did you catch the second *Doctor Strange*? Five years ago, these two lovely people crossed paths on the set of that film. Apparently, fate brought them together, because after all these years, they’ve released a joint project, joined by a third lovely person, Dylan O’Brien, whose films over the last couple of years have been a delight (“Lake Caddo,” “Saturday Night Live,” “The Anniversary”). Watching the trailer, it’s a bit too creepy, to be honest.

Thanks to the guy with the injured leg and the crazy woman next to him, an image of a younger version of Kathy Bates from that very movie immediately pops into your head, only instead of winter landscapes, you’re greeted by sunshine, a beach, and palm trees laden with fruit. The atmosphere is absolutely perfect for spending a couple of hours in the theater and forgetting about the dreary, gloomy, and gray melancholy outside the window. I even managed to be the only person in the theater—pure bliss. All in all, it turned out to be a quirky film that’s hard to call a horror movie, but it’s definitely a solid mix of thriller, comedy, drama, and survival film.

Both main characters are off-putting, though Rachel McAdams’s character is, of course, less so thanks to her survival skills and knowledge. Their personalities aren’t likable—he’s a total jerk with a bad temper and a silver spoon in his mouth, while she’s that annoying coworker everyone wants to stay away from. They don’t even invite her to karaoke just to hear her sing “One Way or Another”—the jerks. Sorry, but to stand out, it’s not enough to be the most valuable employee; you need charisma, good fashion sense, the ability to get along with others and crack jokes, and Rachel McAdams has managed to make a complete fool of herself.

And then there’s the joint business trip, the plane crash, losing consciousness in the water, waking up on an island. It seems like an uninhabited island—nowhere to run, no one to wait for. But is it really that uninhabited? Watch the scenes closely without getting distracted by your phone; interesting discoveries may be waiting for you. The boss is used to thinking he has to be in charge everywhere, but a smart, cunning, and—let’s not beat around the bush—dangerous employee from the strategic planning department will skillfully and decisively turn his idea of order upside down, which will be fascinating to watch. Their relationship will go through various stages.

The man will still think that since he’s got balls between his legs, he can easily wrap some subordinate around his finger. Not a chance—it’s impossible to watch their cat-and-mouse game without laughing. Despite the seriousness of the situation, Sam Raimi doesn’t forget to throw in scenes here and there that’ll have you roaring with laughter in no time. For example, when, during a plane crash, a nasty yuppie’s tie gets caught on the fuselage, forcing Rachel McAdams to witness a hilarious scene. Or, after one incident, she has to rescue her fellow castaway.

But just as she was trying to administer first aid, a torrent of vomit poured out of her, landing right on the poor guy’s face. Why was she throwing up like that? You’ll find out when you go see the movie or stream it online at home. It’s also hard to forget the scene with the boar and the pool of blood. Sam Raimi seemed to have missed this kind of movie so much that he decided to let loose this time, without worrying about Disney executives breathing down his neck. A wild, crazy, unrestrained survival story that takes aim at the corporate world, workplace dynamics, misogyny, and nepotism. It’s a safe bet to watch.

And yes, the scene with the rat might actually scare you—Rachel McAdams was that intense!
