User Review
Old-school in all its glory. Burton, Harris, Moore three middle-aged men, weathered by life, each with his own story. The director takes his time: the first hour is devoted to recruitment and preparation, and it’s not boring because the characters are fascinating to watch. When the operation begins, the pace picks up sharply, and the final retreat through enemy lines is far more nerve-wracking than any modern blockbuster. The most valuable thing here is the weight of the losses. The characters’ deaths don’t go unnoticed, because you’ve had time to grow attached to them. The film is bitter, honest, and shot without embellishment. They don’t make films like this anymore.
