I paid attention to the film solely because of Keanu Reeves, fully aware that with the rest of the cast listed, there was no reason to expect anything outstanding, and also that Keanu himself is fourth on the list of actors — after Seth Rogen (who, in my subjective version of reality, has never really stood out) and Aziz Ansari (who, judging by all appearances, serves as a one-man band here — in addition to being an actor, he also shines as a director, screenwriter, and producer — but who I personally know nothing about).
In such a lighthearted and unbiased mode, the film seemed like an unjustifiably drawn-out sitcom episode in which guest stars try to portray something along the lines of “what if something goes wrong in a classic plot about the exchange of social roles?”
In this mode, in terms of situational humor, especially for those familiar with the work of all the actors involved, it's probably perfectly fine. However, for me personally, as someone who is familiar only with Keanu Reeves' filmography, the film literally fell apart into three parts. In one of them, Reeves, in his trademark role, well known in narrow circles, namely, that of a not particularly mentally gifted but kind and charismatic simpleton, frankly fools around, forming the plot arc of a wayward angel who wanted the best but something went wrong. It was this fragment, and specifically in fan service mode, that I enjoyed the most.
As for the other two storylines, they may be perfectly fine for fans of the actors playing them, but for me, it was a kind of passing performance by someone I didn't recognize in a stand-up routine, while I waited for the person I had come to see in the first place.
If we talk about the overall structure of the story, it can be described in one word — “messy,” which was obviously formed according to the principle: first — an ‘original’ idea from a list of “what if?” options, then a search for performers with the formation of their screen images with an eye on their fan bases, and only after that, in “this will do” mode, the combination of a set of comedic scenes and images into some semblance of a unified plot.
As a result, formally, of course, it can be said that the acts of the story are combined in a very arbitrary way, and the third act declares a metamorphosis that does not follow from what has been shown before, which would look out of place in films that aspire to be anything. However, given the obvious frivolity of the project, I cannot say that this approach specifically in this context causes any rejection. Rather, as I have already written, what is happening is perceived as a full-length “festive” sitcom series for fans, where the global plot and its possible deeper meanings are somewhere at the bottom of the creators' list of priorities. In view of this, I don't think there can be any “objective” assessment. So I'll sum it up like this:
As someone who came to see one actor perform in an obviously lighthearted project, I can say that as a fan of Keanu in general and his lighthearted roles in particular (which he first appeared in in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure in the late 1980s), I personally got exactly what I expected from the film. As for the fact that I had to endure a few more performances as a side dish to the main course, well, that's just the way it is, or to put it more simply, the costs of the genre that you have to put up with.
As for my rating of this film, I give it a “good” rating solely for the well-prepared main course.
