Yorgos Lanthimos' new film, The Lobster, turned out to be unexpectedly good. Previously, I considered this director to be very boring. His films were very confusing and incomprehensible to me, but this film was a great discovery for me. Lanthimos turns what seems like an ordinary kidnapping into a true masterpiece. The composition of the frames is built in a way that is unusual for the viewer. Unusual angles and the fish-eye effect distort space, turning ordinary scenes into something new. Every frame is filled with a kind of mysticism.

Stylistically, ‘Bougonia’ is clearly different from the director's latest works, and I like that. We are offered a less grandiose and grotesque picture to watch. This film is mainly based on dialogue, and I really like that.

I also really like the fact that the film mainly uses only one location, namely Teddy's house. To my surprise, this does not create a feeling of confinement at all. On the contrary, the space begins to “speak,” filling with meaning and emotion.

Lanthimos maintains minimalism, does not overload the story with unnecessary elements, and this is what makes the film so coherent and expressive.

The film captivates the audience not with its dynamics or large-scale scenes, but with its skillful dramaturgy.

The director's work is very impressive. It is clear that every decision has been carefully thought out, from the dialogues to the way the characters look at each other in each scene. Lanthimos does not try to impress the viewer with effects or drama; he trusts in the power of dialogue and the interaction between the characters. I really like this approach, where tension is created not by events, but by meaning, pauses, and glances. It seems as if the director wants me to be a participant, not just an observer.

The cinematography deserves a special mention. Long shots and smooth movements emphasize the characters' inner states without overloading the frame. It is especially enjoyable to see how the cinematographer uses the space of Teddy's house, turning it into a full-fledged participant in the story. The house comes alive and begins to reflect the psychological tension. For me, having a single location was a plus, as I didn't lose focus and was constantly concentrated on the story.

I particularly liked the acting here. The three main characters are revealed in surprising depth. I especially liked the fact that there are only three characters in the film. Thanks to this, you don't get lost in the plot lines, you don't try to remember who is who, but you completely immerse yourself and concentrate on the relationships and motivations of the characters. You seem to ‘grow together’ with the actors, you manage to understand each one, feel their inner world, see what is behind their words and actions. I especially liked that there is no desire to overload the viewer with emotional outbursts; the acting is restrained, but all the more expressive for it.

The dialogues in Bugonia are a clear advantage of the film. Instead of superficial actions, the film chose the path of deep conversations between the characters. Instead of noisy scenes, there are emotional clashes and reflections. The dialogues here are filled with meaning and subtext, and every detail that the author wanted to convey is truly captured. I love it when conversations become a tool for revealing characters, rather than just a way to move the plot forward.

Bugonia became one of the most unexpected and at the same time most complete cinematic experiences for me in the last year. It is a rare example of a film that achieves maximum expressiveness using a minimum of expressive means. And it is precisely this minimalism that makes this film so powerful.

I want to say that Bugonia is a film that deserves people's attention. And this film is really worth watching. This film does not try to compete with genre hits and blockbusters. It wins in other ways—in honesty, in focus, in understanding people and their nature. For me, this is one of those films that will remain in my mind for a long time, because it allows you to look inside the characters, rather than just observing them from the outside.
