A family living in a remote house adheres to strange principles. The parents explained to their children that they must not leave this place until their canine teeth fall out. Using tape recordings, they teach their daughters and son about how the world works—airplanes in the sky are actually toys, the word “zombie” means “little yellow flower,” and the scariest animal in the world is a cat. The only member of the family who can leave the house is the father, who earns money at a nearby factory. The only representative of the outside world who can enter is a girl named Christina, whom the father brings from time to time for his son. But one day he decides that Christina should not disturb the seclusion of this little world either.

User Review

After watching many examples of European cinema, it was only after Dogtooth that I began to think about the extraordinary receptivity and tolerance of the Cannes jury. Based on my own observations, I can say that many viewers, raised on Hollywood films, have little idea about European cinema, which sometimes crosses all moral boundaries in its creative search for truth, beauty, and genuine meaning. And if an ordinary viewer were to watch such a film, their reaction could range from boredom to complete shock and disgust. Apparently, the Cannes jury is very receptive to experiments with the feelings and psyche of directors, since it has the courage to award top prizes to films like this one.

The plot of Dogtooth is a ticket to major film festivals for all debutants. It is a cocktail of deep meaning, shock, and extreme eroticism bordering on pornography, poured into a glass of Pasolini-Ozon production. A degenerate family is by no means a novelty, but the Greek director has surpassed many in his concept and well-thought-out script.

One of the few, Giorgos Lanthimos took as his basis the well-known sociological and psychological problem of raising children. Rejecting rats and mysterious strangers, he placed all responsibility for the decay of the social unit on the head of the family, obsessed with the idea of the moral and physical safety of children. The parents forbid them to leave the walls of their home, limiting their world to a high fence behind which their mythical older brother lives. The children grow up in a distorted world, under the control of their parents. They are simply incapable of picking up anything bad from the outside world because the “outside” simply does not exist for them. However, anyone would say that this is by no means a healthy approach. Whether it would have been justified or not, we will never know, because one of the three children, a young man, begins to experience very specific needs upon reaching puberty, which have to be satisfied by a visiting prostitute. And this, as it turns out, cannot be avoided. And this is the evil of the outside world that penetrates the psychedelic world of the characters and threatens to destroy it completely.

'Dogtooth' is surprising. At one time, in ‘Ratcatcher’, François Ozon tried to show as many deviations as possible, but in 2009, deviations became the norm, and it would seem that it would be better if everything remained that way. It is difficult to comment on the film as you watch it, because you watch the new and insane antics of the characters with greed, interest, and horror, each time pushing the boundaries of your concept of “abnormal.” In fact, I don't think there are any films capable of traumatizing the psyche, but there are films that you have to grow up to see, not only the perverted image of the fresco, but also its true meaning.

An interesting and unusual debut from Greek-born director Giorgos Lathimos, whose name is worth remembering, because he is the one who told us that zombies are yellow flowers, and that you can only leave your parents' blood when your first fang falls out. If you get bored waiting, a dumbbell to the jaw will help. If you want something, you just have to lick the person... well, whatever they ask for. And don't forget that cats are the most terrifying beasts; if you see one, kill it with pruning shears. Dogtooth. I recommend it to everyone. I'm off to catch the plane that crashed in my garden!
