In 1978, following Jackie Chan's success in the action films Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master, director Lo Wei (with whom Chan continued to work) finally gave Jackie the opportunity to play a role that was significantly different from his previous ones. Considering that turning Jackie Chan into a new Bruce Lee by making him play noble and stern avengers didn't work out, Lo Wei decided to go with humor. However, the concept of the new action movie remained the same, and the director continued to treat the scripts and drama with contempt, focusing on fights and action scenes. But, as in previous cases, Astral Kung Fu did not become a successful film (which is the merit of Lo Wei, not anyone else).
Unfortunately, the plot resembles Jackie Chan's previous works (without being a remake). Once again, Jackie plays a student of the Shaolin monks. Once again, the villains try to steal a valuable book that teaches one of the most dangerous and spectacular styles of kung fu. Once again, only Jackie Chan will possess this knowledge to confront the villains (with Ding Shek and James Tien also appearing in the film)... When you have to watch the same thing over and over again, you ask yourself, “What's the difference?” What new elements did Lo Wei introduce to make his Astral Kung Fu different from The Art of Shaolin: Snake and Crane, starring Chan? It turns out that in the film, Jackie's hero has invisible helpers—ghosts who can beat up a living person if they want to... Of course, keeping in mind the task of making a comedy action film, Lo Wei did his best to make the film funny. But Jackie Chan himself did not like the script, and he found the humor flat and unfunny.
The only thing that attracts attention is the fights. Moreover, fans of kung fu action films will like the fact that there are a lot of these fights. In fact, the whole film is about someone hitting someone, someone defending themselves, and someone attacking. Chan's character fights people of different ages (and even different genders). However, I can't say anything else good about this second-rate action movie. Of course, it's not the worst film in Jackie Chan's filmography, but I can't say it's one of those films you'd want to watch a second time either.
