User Review
After watching the movie, you immediately want to ask our localizers: what the hell is "Bridesmaids"? Of course, it can sometimes be difficult to translate a movie’s original title into Russian, but why didn’t “The Bride’s Friends” work for them? After all, there’s no Vegas here: the heroines were planning to go there, but in the end, they never made it. So the title is completely off-topic, defies common sense, and sets viewers up for false expectations.
As for the movie itself, it’s quite watchable, moderately charming, but very uneven: for every plus, there’s a minus. Take the cast, for example. There’s the lovely Kristen Wiig in the lead role. I’ve seen quite a few movies with her, but she hadn’t really stood out to me before. Here, however, the actress delivers a truly vibrant, funny performance and is now deservedly receiving praise from American critics. Rose Byrne continues to pleasantly surprise, appearing here in an uncharacteristic role as a glamorous, slightly bitchy beauty. On the other hand, we have the rather scary, completely uninteresting Maya Rudolph as the bride herself and the rather obnoxious plus-size Melissa McCarthy, who is the source of the film’s silliest jokes.
The humor in "Bridesmaids" isn’t bad; there are even a few comedic mini-masterpieces: for example, when the hungover character played by Weig goes on a rampage on the plane, or when she gets into a heated argument with a young customer at work. These moments alone make the movie worth watching. But then again, there are plenty of drawn-out, lackluster, supposedly comedic conversations, and some rather dull gags performed by the aforementioned McCarthy; and the scene in the store while shopping for dresses, when the characters experience, um, digestive issues, was clearly unnecessary.
Overall, it’s a decent film, though far from perfect.
