Until yesterday, I hadn’t heard of "Notting Hill". And for some reason, I didn’t put off watching it indefinitely, as I usually tend to do. I guess the magic of the Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant duo did the trick.
The film itself is the epitome of classic rom-coms from the ’90s and 2000s, the kind that radiate romance in every direction.
With one caveat: here, everything is portrayed naturally and without any farce.
No one is out for revenge; there are no cheap jabs or clichéd drama. Everything is somehow calm, heartfelt, and unhurried.
The girl has missed normal conversation and walks without the ever-present paparazzi so much that a conversation with the shop owner becomes a breath of fresh air for her, where she doesn’t have to sign autographs or smile constantly.
And then, they won’t have a classic date. Instead, she’ll find herself at a house party, and his friends and relatives will give her the feeling of a normal, warm evening where she doesn’t have to pretend and can just be herself. Of course, after she leaves, they’ll be completely blown away, but that will be beside the point.
'And one day, very soon, I’ll fade away. People will realize I can’t act. I’ll just be an ordinary middle-aged woman, a pale shadow of a famous actress.'
Undoubtedly, Roberts’s character loves her craft and is grateful to her fans, but she’s just so tired of the constant gossip and scandals. She’s also tired of being at the mercy of abusers and the image concocted by the tabloids.
And Grant’s sweet and naive character, as it were, incidentally, makes both the main character and you fall in love with him. His lively expressions, genuine smile, and sincere desire to be by her side are a breath of fresh air for the main character.
'Actually, fame is so fleeting, you know? As for the rest, I’m just an ordinary girl who came to a guy and told him she loves him.'
I adore films from that era for the romance in every frame.
