It took Greg (Ben Stiller) 10 years, two children, and countless trials for his father-in-law (Robert De Niro) to partially come to terms with his existence. But after Greg, finding himself broke, lands a dead-end job at a pharmaceutical company, Jack’s suspicions grow exponentially. When Greg and Pam’s entire family—including her ex-boyfriend Kevin (Owen Wilson)—gathers for the twins’ birthday, Greg will have to prove to the skeptical Jack that he’s the real man of the house. This third installment in the story of the Burns and Faker families introduces us to the next generation, in which the parents—Gaylord and Pam—are now trying to raise their children as they see fit. The story takes place 10 years later, when the loving grandparents are planning to visit for their grandchildren’s birthday. This time, the film was directed by Paul Weitz, co-writer of "American Pie". The film received mixed reviews and even won a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actress, but watching it now, following the previous installments, you don’t feel like it’s lost its appeal, even though the focus has noticeably diminished.

Robert De Niro no longer projects the aura of a former CIA agent, having noticeably imbued his character with humanity and a detective-like quality. Ben Stiller serves as a vital link between both families—the Burns and the Fakers—advancing in his career while trying to resolve all their financial and domestic problems. Samantha and Henry’s children, who differ in character and temperament, provide a humorous subtext to the film.

How do you develop the plot once the two families have met and moved past the acceptance phase? Focus the narrative on the legacy and introduce a romantic subplot to provide the foundation for a melodrama. The subplot involving retiree Jack Burns seems obvious; the director sets the stage for it through exposition and projects it onto Gaylord to convince the audience of the protagonist’s independence and responsibility, adding more family hassles and spontaneous decisions from the father-in-law. However, the inclusion of the supporting character Andy Garcia, played by Jessica Alba, comes across as an element of hopelessness. Jokes about the actor Andy Garcia are flying around everywhere. Perhaps that’s exactly what Paul Weitz intended.

The comedy seems to force out obvious jokes about Alba in order to put Gaylord Faker to the test. In return, to earn an important title and respect, the character faces various obstacles (as always), surveillance, and threats. The subplot starts to get tiresome, with its obvious flirting and setups trying to throw Faker off track, thereby giving Jack something to think about.

The writers don’t forget to juggle all the franchise’s characters, playfully poking fun at the enlightened Kevin, which is quite enjoyable. Owen Wilson is always a delight on screen. The older Fakers, however, are completely overshadowed by Jack Gaylord’s suspicions and investigations. Dustin Hoffman was initially dissatisfied with the script and the change in directors, so his screen time was cut, which also affected Barbra Streisand’s role. Despite this, the film presents us with a generational conflict, breaking down family dynamics into three stages: grandfather, father, and son.

"Little Fockers" was originally intended to focus on the children—a group of very different siblings who each have their own relationship with their father, grandfather, and Uncle Kevin. But that alone isn’t enough to sustain an entire film, which is why we also have the themes of inheritance, comparisons, and tests of loyalty. Nevertheless, this is still the same franchise that delights audiences with beloved characters, humor, and the continuation of the story. Production on “Meet the Parents 2” has already been announced, which is a bit concerning. The third installment already stretched the plot in various ways—so what’s next?
