A completely chaotic, surreal film laced with sex, genitals, revolution, madness, and humanity’s indifference, as well as a sick TV show, fascism, communism, and other regimes. There is a semblance of a plot in which a multimillionaire’s mother selects the “perfect virgin” for her son on a TV talent show—a choice that, however, brings happiness to neither him nor herself. At the same time, a ramshackle tugboat drifts through the waters of symbolism, with Marx’s head on the bow and a hippie girl on board, intoxicated by the revolutionary struggle, who is soon joined by a sexually preoccupied sailor from *Potemkin*. The director lets his imagination run wild, and visually, it all looks quite intriguing—in his world of absurdity, set to revolutionary songs, everything is governed by sexual desire, digestion, and the urge to vomit. Many scenes are simply repulsive, and fans of shock therapy and “lobotomies” will be thrilled. As for me, this is clearly over the top—the end doesn’t justify the means.

“Sweet Movie” is a powerful social satire, a public anatomical theater for future generations. Makaveev dissects the inner essence of contemporary political and social movements—socialism, communism, fascism, the sexual revolution, and capitalist consumer society, where everything and everyone is for sale—using a knife and the techniques of a butcher.

And one final, purely subjective observation: the only criterion by which a film can be judged is the level of the director’s talent and craftsmanship. Without it, epithets of all kinds—“auteur,” “prestigious,” “cult,” “not for everyone”—simply don’t hold water. These labels also fail when the director’s philosophy is unclear or contradictory, when the visuals are pale and lack expression, and when the central idea is ambiguous or barely perceptible.

Makaveev’s methods and techniques are straightforward, yet magnificent in their execution: “I always use sex as a confrontation, seduction, and tension. And, of course, sex is the closest relative of the revolutionary spirit: it breaks the rules, conquers new territories, and gives birth to new life.”
