Cyrano de Bergerac 4K 1990 Ultra HD 2160p
A film adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s classic play. This adaptation tells the story of a gallant 17th-century French swordsman and poet who cannot bring himself to confess his love to his cousin. She, however, is in love with his new colleague, Vincent Perez, who lacks Cyrano’s eloquence but also doesn’t have such a huge nose. So De Bergerac begins writing love letters for his beloved… Depardieu was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Cyrano and quite deservedly won the “Cannes ’90” award for Best Actor. A wonderful film. Cinematographer Pierre Lhomme received the Grand Prize from the Higher Technical Commission at Cannes ’90. The film won César Awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Jacques Weber), Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction, Best Music, and Best Sound. It also won Félix Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.

I’ll take this opportunity to give free rein to my fervent enthusiasm: this is one of my absolute favorite movies, no more, no less. I can’t find a single flaw in it. It would be superfluous to list the technical merits of the production—and when, in fact, have the French ever made poor film adaptations of their own literary works? The point here is something else entirely, something I’d rather talk about. About the story itself. And about the man whose name gave the play by Edmond Rostand its title. His fate is an astonishing case, an example you simply wouldn’t find in our time: when ambition is pitted against honor. Success—a chivalrous sultan. He was the one
who lived a life outside all the rules of this world.
He was a musician, yet left no sheet music behind.
He was a philosopher, yet left no books behind.
He was an astronomer, yet somewhere in the starry sky
His scholarly trail is lost forever.
He was a poet, yet wrote no poems!...
But he lived his life, after all, like a poet!
And that is no small thing! Many of the brilliant, noble dignitaries of that time, who lived lives with tainted consciences, can they boast that they are remembered? Whereas the name of the poet and romantic Cyrano, for those who know and love his story, is a kind of epigraph to something daring, honest, and strong. Many cherish his memory, for it kindles inspiration in their hearts. Cynicism is the antonym of romanticism. The world contains both. But for some reason, the average mind places greater value on the former—presumably because it makes life easier. It is sadder—but simpler—because it is permissible to mock the sincerity of feelings, not to believe in friendship, to despise honor, and, as a result, to show no leniency or mercy toward people. As for romanticism, its adherents tend to belittle it. But it is by no means rose-colored glasses. It is a state of mind in which many good qualities, impulses, and feelings come together. A romantic can know a great deal—sad and terrible things—about life and yet not let their heart grow hard. I’m reminded of another wonderful literary character—Gottfried Lenz from Remarque’s *Three Comrades*. Anyone who has read the book or seen the movie or play is probably smiling right now...
Words are many, but the love in a beautiful play, a beautiful movie, or a beautiful on-screen performance—it’s indescribable. Something simply has to be kindled in the heart, ignited by this story. Although it may not strike a chord—for the reasons mentioned above. But you have to watch the movie. Even if only for educational purposes. Still, I very much hope that what you see won’t leave you indifferent, or at least will give you food for thought—there’s more than enough material for that.
