“Sugarland Express” is Spielberg's first movie made specifically for wide release. It was filmed on the basis of real events. The movie turned out to be decent, but noticeably inferior to most of the director's projects.
The movie has several problems. First, the main characters are not very pleasant. They behave too stupidly. And if Goldie Hawn's character is somehow saved by the charm of the actress herself, then William Etherton's character is very annoying. Secondly, the movie lacks dynamics.
Now about the pluses. The movie is filmed very professionally. The camerawork is excellent, the soundtrack is beautiful, the humor is present. But the main plus is that Spielberg made an atmospheric movie.
Overall, as mentioned above, this is a decent work. Spielberg managed to make a curious road movie in the style of country and western. And it's just interesting to see how the skills of one of the world's greatest directors evolved.
