Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki) is an unemployed cellist who decides to return to his hometown to start a new life. Here, after misreading an advertisement, he finds himself working for a funeral company that needs a specialist in funeral ceremonies. Despite his wife's protests, he takes the job and becomes a “nokansi” — the Japanese term for a funeral director, someone who mediates between the living and those who have “passed away” to the other world. In this unique way, the main character rediscovers the meaning of life.

“Calmness and precision” is how Daigo described his mentor's work. The same can be said about the entire film. I love Japanese cinema, and “Departures” is one of the best. It is very musical. And not only because the main character is a cellist; the film is simply permeated with music. Music is like life and death. It is very symbolic. You can watch it in one sitting. Reading the synopsis, I thought that the title “Departures” meant dead people, but after watching it, I realized that it is not so much about them as it is about us, searching for ourselves and our place in the world. I highly recommend watching it.
