The film is set in America in the 1930s. Young Grace, having escaped from a gang of gangsters, finds refuge in the small town of Dogville somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. The locals, each more beautiful than the next, are willing to hide her. In return, they ask for nothing, except perhaps some help around the house or looking after the children. But gradually, the charming Dogville turns into a prison for the girl. Unable to endure the inhuman abuse of her new acquaintances, Grace turns to her father for help, knowing full well that he has only one way of dealing with enemies: killing them.

User Review

Dogville is perhaps the most famous film by the undoubtedly cult, but at the same time highly controversial Danish director Lars von Trier. A director who strongly dislikes society, and people in general. It is precisely by castigating their sins, which, incidentally, undoubtedly exist, that he occupies himself in the vast majority of his films.

It seems that this film is a particular source of pride for Lars, because it is in this film that he has reached a kind of peak. The arsenal of artistic means in the film, on the contrary, is deliberately reduced to a minimum. Even the notorious sets are practically absent from the film. Only one idea is elevated to the absolute. The presence of everything else in Dogville is caused by nothing more than production necessity. Trier conducts a kind of experiment on a closed community of people, a kind of reality show. The roles of all the participants are written out, and the action rolls towards its inevitable, according to Trier, denouement.

And it all starts like this. A young girl named Grace, the daughter of a major (or not so major?) mobster, runs away from her father and ends up in a small town forgotten by God and man, located somewhere far from roads and other signs of civilization. Grace, in this case, is more than just the main character. She acts as a kind of antithesis to von Trier himself, and through this contrast, as a conduit for his ideas. The girl, who initially finds refuge in Dogville, is very happy about this circumstance. She wants everyone to like her, to help everyone. She loves people and believes in them. As you may have guessed, all these thoughts and ideas are deeply alien to Trier himself.
Let's return to the idea. In short, the main idea of the film is that humans are extremely dangerous animals. And it is difficult to disagree with this. Another question is that it is presented to us in too dark colors. The director subjects the inhabitants of Dogville, who in this case are more like laboratory rats, to the influence of two very strong feelings. Simultaneously fear and the desire to command, even if only over one individual. Added to all this is society's almost universal ability to justify any of its actions, because it can never feel guilty for long. In general, the ability to fear, which is by nature usually animalistic, can easily wash away the veneer of civilization from a person and, in fact, all that is human, as well as the irresistible desire to rule over someone, which is inherent in each of us to one degree or another, could have long been recognized as circumstances that require no further proof, if too many people did not want to believe in them. Trier, of course, believes in them, which is why he shows all this so clearly.

The ending of the film, which will surely shock many, is very symbolic and is key to understanding Dogville. In it, Trier wins a convincing victory over his antipode, Grace, which is not surprising. As a result, the director's message can be formulated as follows. Look around you, and you may be able to see Dogville around you, and the most daring may even see it in themselves. Despite the film's accuracy in depicting certain features of human behavior, I would not advise taking all of Trier's arguments as the ultimate truth. After all, the film depicts an artificially created situation, and there is no shortage of grotesqueness in its portrayal. We may indeed be bad, but we are not hopeless. For the sake of diversity, believe in humanity sometimes, even if it is not easy.

By the way, despite the deliberate primitivism and extremely one-sided portrayal of reality, I really like the film. I agree with many of the director's ideas, and against the backdrop of the surrounding splendor, such artistic minimalism even looks original.
