I'll be honest with you, I can even swear to it—this is one of the most powerful and shocking films of the decade. No, there are plenty of masterpieces out there—but this isn't just a masterpiece, this film transcends the boundaries of ordinary cinema, it becomes a real story, frightening, monstrous, wild, but real. Few films can cross this line—even masterpieces remain just films, gradually fading away, but this one will not be forgotten for a long time. This dark, evil, and cruel film will haunt you relentlessly if you let it penetrate your soul, touch your mind and feelings even a little. This is a great and terrifying film.
Its greatness lies, first of all, in the subject matter it touches upon: it is always dangerous to make films on religious themes, to deal with otherworldly forces that determine our fates is frightening and dangerous - few actors agree to play roles in such films. After all, it is very easy to slip into banal quotations from the Bible, reduce everything to the usual struggle between good and evil, and end up with a didactic epic mess. But the creators of The Advocate feared neither God nor the devil while working on the film.
I am a believer, but not fanatically devoted to my faith. I often have quite reasonable questions about the Bible, the church, and religious dogma, but none of them can provide answers. Blind faith, which is unacceptable to me, drives many people. This film is not recommended for such people. But I listened to the devil's speech, and, monstrous thing that he is, he is right in many ways. This devil on screen spoke of things that are quite real, literally tangible. It is difficult not to be swayed by his words, because in his most popular form, he completely destroys everything that religion has been hammering into people for centuries.
And here, of course, Al Pacino deserves enormous credit. A great actor, he played perhaps his best role, if it was a role at all... It is impossible to play like that without feeling like the devil himself, without looking at this miserable world through his eyes, without measuring people by his standards...
If the devil exists in this world, he must look like Al Pacino, because you just have to see him — just look at him and be horrified by his manner of speaking, look into his infinitely understanding and infinitely cold eyes, listen to his speeches—unrestrained, seeming so natural and captivatingly honest, watch how his face changes during a conversation with one person or another.
It's impossible to describe, but once you've seen Pacino in this role, it's impossible to forget him! The actor is a devotee of the Stanislavski system, which requires actors to deeply penetrate the characters' personalities. He took on a role that ordinary mortals could never know or understand and played it with devilishly captivating charm!
One could talk about Al Pacino for hours, quoting his monologues, but he is not alone in this film. Although it is difficult to notice the other actors against his backdrop. Keanu Reeves played his role accurately, deeply, truthfully—a man who pursues the proverbial happiness he sees in money, things, and success, and sets out on a fiery path...
He makes pathetic attempts to fight it, but still loses, because you can't defeat someone who has studied human nature for millennia and knows it perfectly. Freedom of choice, you say? No, there is no choice—we are controlled by puppeteers, one white, the other black, they play with us, and we are pathetic puppets, thinking that we can find a way out, escape from them, from ourselves... Reeves' character told us about this—and he told it magnificently!
Charlize Theron—I never saw her as anything more than just another Hollywood supermodel, but here, in addition to her stunning beauty and gorgeous body, she demonstrates great talent—graceful, spontaneous: a cheerful and simple girl at the beginning of the film and the complete opposite at the end...
Yes, but what am I talking about—everyone was magnificent here, of course, it's hard not to look like a stump next to Pacino, but some managed to do just that. The thriller really penetrates the most hidden corners of your soul, if you have something to be ashamed of or afraid of—it will immediately come to the surface, it will pull out your sins. It draws you in, plays with you, laughs at you... It is dangerous and cruel. It is tragic and terrifying. The hellishly captivating spirit of this film is impossible to resist.
Very few films can reach such heights. It has an atmosphere of hopelessness, of panicked flight from fate, everything in it is deceptive, even the ending turns out to be a cruel joke.
When naming the ten greatest films of the 90s, this one must be included! It is impossible to rate this film - it is above any rating.
