Sentimentality isn’t a flaw. It’s an essential part of being human—one that simply doesn’t come to the surface very often, or even at all. Yet many people hide it, seeing it as a weakness. And that’s what causes them to suffer later on. Joachim Trier has decided to have a therapeutic conversation with us on this topic, joining the main characters in their attempt to emerge from a prolonged depression of misunderstanding.
Relationships in a family where discord has set in are always difficult. Everyone will speak their own truth, refuse to listen to others, and harbor hatred. Our mistakes will always be with us. Our past will never be erased from the marks it leaves on our bodies and souls. The question is simply how we will live with this—and whether we will. No one is asking us to accept one another just like that. But we can try to understand. Pain is best drowned out not in solitude.
In his film, Trier presents the house as a very important character. It has witnessed more than one generation and has become a full-fledged member of the family. It is no coincidence that the director assigns it a special role right from the very beginning. The house literally absorbs all the emotions of the people inside it. And because of this, at the end of the story, we see the most concise and fitting conclusion for this character.
Of course, the film wouldn’t work without the wonderful actors on whom the entire drama hinges. Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reinsve are simply magnificent. Incredible work on screen. You literally feel everything that happens to the characters with your own body. Simply ‘bravo’.
This film could be a real lifesaver for you if you're struggling with depression. Although, it doesn't seem that way at first. It has the power to strike a deep chord in your heart if the story resonates with your own life. This is a story about the people closest to us who are so far away. They are all wounded in some way. And it’s very important that these wounds don’t become too deep. There’s no need to fear sentimentality. You should welcome it with a smile.
