Bob Rafelson—a producer and close friend of Jack Nicholson—directed one of New Hollywood’s most poignant dramas in 1970. The actor became one with the character of Robert Dupy—a high-society drifter who gave up a stable life for a shift on an oil rig.
Dupy’s rebellious persona—that of a disillusioned yet promising pianist—made Nicholson an icon of the 1960s with its contradictory romantic nature.

Someone once told me that Nicholson doesn’t play ordinary people, that he’s never played a single role as an average person—they’re all sadists, psychopaths, rogue cops, the dregs of society, criminals, or detectives with a shady reputation. And here, suddenly, a musician—though in the opening scenes he’s driving in pilings and is such a hard worker, as if trying to prove to everyone (and himself, for that matter) that he’s no slacker. However...

Bobby comes from a talented musical dynasty. And, as is often the case with gifted children of equally talented parents, at some point in life they need to rebel, to take a different path, one distinct from their parents’. But in a world of rough-and-tumble hard workers, he feels suffocated, languishing from boredom, monotony, and the narrow-mindedness of his new friends and girlfriend; and among his fellow musicians, he is irritated by posturing, rivalry, and talent greater than his own (which, incidentally, is nothing more than good technique honed through diligent practice).

Bobby is demanding of everyone except himself. He needs love, understanding, and people who cater to his tastes, yet he gives nothing in return. Rayet, a waitress who is sincerely in love with him, grinds his teeth with her narrow-mindedness, short-sightedness, and naivety, while Catherine, his brother’s girlfriend, insists that Bobby first learn to love himself before demanding reciprocity from others. But… it’s easier for Bobby to run away than to show his feelings.

Well! He’s not the first, nor will he be the last man to act this way. The film isn’t bad, really, but I thought it was a bit ahead of its time for 1970. Although… perhaps that was precisely when the turning point in intellectual cinema began.
